Insurance and tears

Re: Crystal - good insuance underwriter & gas cookers

Kristal

Just reading the thread and I recognise your yacht 'Crystal' and know the previous owners well. Crystal used to occasionally sit close to my West Solent O. D. in the canal at Heybridge Basin. She's a vey nice classic boat and I'm sure you have a good survey on her.

As regards getting insurance on an old (1930) wooden boat. I was with a Bristol company of marine insurance brokers, no names mentioned, but last year the premium almost doubled. I asked around with friends and came up with a quote one third what I was quoted by my previous insurance brokers.

The good quote with race cover & road transport included came from Goslings, insurance brokers, in West Mersea, Mersea Island, Essex. The policy is underwritten by Norwich Union I believe, and I'm very pleased! I'm sorry I don't have the full address of Goslings as I'm presently at work in Chad in Central Africa. However, West Mersea is a small place and a telephone directory / Yellow Pages will give it to you. They have a lot of wooden boats on their books. My own survey was only a shipwrights survey and several years old but proved acceptable. You'll need to have your previous insurer send you a no-claims bonus letter if you are carrying any no-claims with you.

And regards gas cookers. My West Solent One Design has almost flush decks, very low freeboard and to build in a gas locker was almost impossible without ruining her looks. As I'm sure it will be the case on Crystal. I bought one of the cheaper paraffin Taylors double hobs some years back (still expensive) and have never looked back. Paraffin and methylated spirits for starting it up is available most anywhere and you don't use a lot.

I'm sure Taylor's paraffin stoves are more dangerous than gas, however insurance underwriters don't seem to realise this! So they are still acceptable!

Hope this lot helps someone, sorry I only just came across the post, a few days after everyone one else has contributed!

Cheers.

Re: Crystal - good insuance underwriter & gas cookers

I have a double burner paraffin cooker. Had a tip the other day and it worked beautifully.

Bought a gas piezo-ignited blowlamp from Homebase and and it lit first time. No meths smell and no black smoke or paraffin smell. I use Lamp Oil as it burns cleaner than pure paraffin.
