Hi guys.

Is it possible to buy and install a calorifier, either buying the parts as required individually or is there a kit someone sells for a Mercruiser 5.0L 220HP V8 Engine with Alpha 1 Sterndrive.

If you see my other posts I should say I have decided to buy a Bayliner 2452. Its unfortunately not with a diesel as I would have preferred, but I am really pleased with the price I am paying, and that more than makes up for the extra cost in petrol to derv. Its with a great trailer, so I can drive to where I want to fish/dive/cruise, launch and therefore not have to cruise miles around the coast to get to different places I want to anchor. The cockpit area is great for my sporting needs and the wife likes the bigger windows, and the booth type and table seating arrangement this offers to the more sport cruisers with sitting in the V berth. Inside headroom is great too.

But the negative is no hot water. I really want a hot tap/shower, at least in the cockpit area and possibly hot tap in the galley.

I can see calorifiers online from 15L upwards, the 2452 does have loads of space in compartments under the deck each side of the engine, for the calorifier, pump etc but I am looking for guidance to spec the correct size etc for the 220hp mercruiser.
.
Has anyone installed a hot water system retrospectively?

Thanks Steve.

Club members boat has a heat exchanger /calorifier fitted to the Starboard Volvo Penta 175 HP V6 petrol engine of his boat.
Appears to be a simple bolt on device that requires no major dismantling.
Was causing engine overheat problems due to not apparently having ever been cleaned out.

Tried some of the usual wimpy propietory marine descalers with little effect.
Problem solved after 30 mins soaked in not very diluted brick cleaner. (at your own risk) :)

If it is a raw water cooled engine you will generally need a supplementary electric circulating pump to assist flow through the calorifier. Pump is switched through the ignition so that it comes on every time the engines is started. All parts can be obtained through ASAP Supplies or Cleghorn Waring. (Xylem Jabsco shop).

I fitted one to my 2655 with a raw water cooled V8, it worked fine, the hardest part was getting the hot water piping through to the galley and heads so I could have hot shower. I made up my own T connections to tap into raw water system and it didn't need a supplementary pump, I took the water out at the thermostat housing and returned it to the inlet side of the water pump.

I think the pipe runs will not be too bad on a 2452. The heads is on the same side as the galley, but at the moment I just want to install a transom shower, the 2452 has self draining deck, I have seen this unit at Marine Super Store for the transom ( https://www.marinesuperstore.com/freshwater-system/showers/whale-swim-n-rinse-tansom-shower ) and I will just change the manual sink pump for an electric hot and cold in the galley. I will plan to refit the heads, but that will need lining and I shall have to look at if its possible to drain out if I put a shower tray in.
I don't own the boat officially yet, picking it up in 2 weeks, but I am just making sure my ideas are possible before it is too late.

Thank you Steve.
