Inland Route from Holland to the Med

Can anyone give any advice on the nicest route from Holland to the Med for a relatively inexperienced boater?

Difficult to advise on "nicest" - do you wish to visit Paris en route? Maas/Meuse/Canal de l'Est Nord, Moselle, Canal de l'Est Sud [C. de Vosges], then Saone at Corre onto Rhone then Med.

By nicest I meant not more heavy commercial traffic than necessary and with some nice sights along the way. Paris would interesting though not essential. In no rush in fact the longer the better!

We just bought a Dutch boat and sailed her to the UK, but previous owners raved on about the 'nicest' route south being via Maastricht and the Ardennes wending down to Lyon .............
