Gosport gets slagged off in these parts from time-to-time but, like Mark Anthony (did he ever visit Gosport, ed?) I am here to sing its praises.

Overnighted in Haslar. Yes, they had a berth. Could we have one well up the marina? Of course, sir. Showers, big, warm, free soap and shampoo. Price reasonable (cheaper than Yarmouth if you count mooring, water taxi fares and showers). Ferried across to Pompey. Gunwharf Quay. Major shopping incentive for SWMBOs, cheap designer stuff. Even acquired a pair of really trendy yoof shoes from Oakley myself. A dozen or so places to eat - OK, no Michelin stars, but a change from the choice of the pub, the Indian and/or Chinese or the chippy that many places offer. Could have done a multi-screen cinema or 10-piin bowling as well. (How about a Scuttlebutt 10-pin match somewhen?)

Ferry back to Gosport where the borough council had laid on a free concert to greet us, starring The Foundations (Why do you build me, Buttercup baby?). More forms of life there than you'd see anywhere except the Jerry Springer show. Bopped away for a couple of hours, shopping bags in hand. Then as we left to go back to the lugger, they let off fireworks. Terrific.

On top of it all, big ships to look at, including a couple of aircraft carriers (why aren't they at sea, defending the realm, or strafing pot-bobbers, or capturing BBC correspondents and delivering them bound-and-gagged to Alistair Campbell's HQ on the top floor of 10 Downing Street)?

Decided the world's most boring job must be to run the MOD police boat that hovers off the RN ships, on the offchance that a Very Bad Person will try and dent them.

So, all in all, not the place if you want to swing to your hook with only oystercatchers for company, but for a good afternoon/night out not a bad bet.

Absolutely, couldn't agree more, we're there every weekend in C & N's. Used to be Hamble Point until March and was only saying yesterday how much better Gosport is.

Right next to the marina are these giant former (present?) council blocks that the Estate Agents seem to offer at sub £100k prices. It has always struck me how much more satisfactory it would be in all senses to buy one of these and look at the newly gentrified Portsmouth Waterfront than to pay plus £250k prices and look the other way!

Dont tell everyone - they'll want to be in there and its fairly busy already.

It must be said that decent dining is a rarity in Gosport. The restaurant in Haslar (by the offices in the car park!) is pretty resonable. Lightship good for crew breakfasts and has seen a marked improvement with recent changes of ownership. One thing to mention is the market in Gosport High Street on a Saturday morning which is quite interesting + the butchers/bakers for fresh produce.

IMHO the Castle by C&N is overrated - good price but the food it too oily.

.. and don't forget that if all you are after is a decent meal and a pint of 6X, rather than shopping, you should visit the Castle Inn just outside Camper's marina. And try the Profiteroles: for my chocaholic 1st mate, they are still the highlight of the season so far.

1.The "Caff" opposite The Castle for a big Breakfast
2. The "Short-cut" exit from Haslar to the Ferry/Town
3. The second hand bookshops, one opposite the ferry and one back up the High Street and off towards Haslar a bit! (Can't do better than that).

The beer in the Clarence Tavern (a bit further on from the Castle). Brewed (almost) on the premises.
