Does anyone have an idea how to remove the impeller easily and without damaging it. My engine is Yanmar 4JTD. Last spring I got good help to put it into its place from this forum (tightened it with a cable binder which "automatically" was pushed out when the impeller was pushed in. So simple!)

You can use two screwdrivers with the blades placed on the body of the impeller, and pushed against the pump face. Difficult to explain ......... but works without damaging anything if you go carefully.

I use needle nose pliers to grip the impellor body. I first wrap some elctrical tape around the plier nose to soften the grip so they won't cut into the impellor material.

Oh deep joy . . .

something that's actually more hassle than a Volvo MD6a to work on . . .

The people who design these things so they can't be maintained easily by their owners should be first against the wall come the glorious day . . .

You can also buy a special "impeller removing tool".

I use a modified pair of needle nose pliers - a cheap pair which I heated up the ends and bent them in so the grip the centre boss very firmly and then v easy to pull the impellor out. Kept near the engine with a spare impellor.

I used two old toothbrushes for years (never ever throw away an old toothbrush - they have a 1000 uses on board especially when cleaning winches) as I felt they were less likely to damage the pump housing than screwdrivers. However, about five years ago I asked Father Christmas for a proper impeller puller. They are a treat to use and make the whole job far less stressful. Its not long to go now, so get writing!!!
