Re: Scat

I thought we could use that one here. We now have the foundation for alternative words. Just need more input.

We can now say 'scat' instead of ess aitch aye tee. What can we say instead of the other naughty words ?

Suggestions?

Re: Scat

Re: Euphemisms

'Spose <font color=blue> 'kinL'</font color=blue> has got to be a starter? And perhaps we could colour-code 'rude' words - in blue of course.

Re: Scat

As well as a tobacco, shag is also a carpet weave and a type of bird (feathered variety).

So while out on his walks, he sat on his shag and smoked a shag and watched the shags shagging... sorry Kim, copping off

I don\'t think so Pheran

Pheran you are wrong imho. I can't tell if you were laying into me in your post, WRONG was in big letters and you put no smilies in there....

But you are most definitely wrong. You are quite correct that the origins are Greek and the pure form is skat, not scat. The English word skatole for example retains the purer k. However the English word "scatology" only exists with the c, not the k. You have made the mistake of assuming that becuase the purer form used in other English words is "skat", then this must also apply to the word "scatology". But it doesn't. "Scatology" simply uses the impurer "scat", that's just the history of the word and that's how it is. There are zillions of English words that are impure derivations but that doesn't make them wrong, that's just the way it is.

In short, there simply is no English word "skatology" in the recognised dictionaries, only the word "scatology".

At least that's how I understand it - if others know better please say! :)

Wasn't laying into you - capitals were to indicate the strength of my argument. Sat here surrounded by dictionaries - so I still say you're wrong /forums/images/icons/smile.gif/forums/images/icons/smile.gif/forums/images/icons/smile.gif/forums/images/icons/smile.gif/forums/images/icons/smile.gif/forums/images/icons/smile.gif/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

ps can't believe I'm sat here arguing about the spelling of a word I never use anyway. Nurse.....................

Re: meaning of scatology

<font color=blue> My fault, when I write a Greek word I do a literal translation writing down what my ear hears. Ergo the Greek word for siht is 'Skatta' this may not be the way it is spelled but it is the way it sounds, namely a 'K' sound. So... Ghammisou Mallaccas

Re: meaning of scatology

I think we should do as Kim has in the title to this thread and if a word commences with "F" replace it with a "D" or "wr" with "sh" .. eg Feel my wrist would become deel my shist , or "serve a writ" would become ... and so dorth ..

OK, smilies noted! Please can you tell me which dictionaries, precisely, you have that contain the word "skatology"?
