I’ll lay odds that most of the people knocking this magnificent achievement and world record couldn’t sail that Tri around the Isle of Wight let alone the world.

For anyone who has sailed anything single handed however short a passage it is hard work.

But from most of us proud Brits –

Well done Ellen, you deserve to be a Dame
Well done her support team
Well done B&Q, may this sponsorship be an example to other corporations

Sailing experience has nothing to do with the media marketing publicity exercise that in my view is reached saturation point and is now in over - kill.. this isn't actually criticism of Ellen McArthur but more of the corporate demands made by sponsors.

If you must criticize everyone

This forum is a literary medium, placed here by the good folks at IPC to further debate and observation by those who have an interest in boats. So if you must criticize people who are exercising their right to have moan, please would detail your journalistic qualifications, together with a list of published material, stating which magazine or journal it was published in and the dates. Also please let us know why your ethical viewpoint is so superior to anyone else's.
For the record I think Ellen has done well and won't say a word against her, but I defend the rights of those who wish to do so. However whinging and mealy-mouthed they make themselves sound.
This forum does suffer from some vociferous minorities who don't like to see their viewpoint criticised, who insist that the unspeakable in pusuit of the uneatable is a wonderful thing, and as for the libellous way they treat our dear Prime minister, when none of them has the wherewithal to run the proverbial in a brewery, let alone a country as great as the UK, I really don't know what we're coming to.

Stephen - you really must read some history.
TB follows a long and illustrious line of Prime Ministers (and not just of this Country) who developed lying to an Art Form, . He is still an apprentice. The only thing that has changed is the Media, which is just as perfidious, but much more influential now.

If you consider that those who have not had the sailing, money raising, etc experience such as Ellen has, are not knowledgable enough to criticise her I have to wonder how it is that that you consider others of equal zilch experience are knowledgable enough to worship her.

You have done all these things I assume so are competent to judge her achievement? Perhaps you could give a balanced view of the hardships she endured against your own?

Or are you just trying to put up artificial barriers to stymie others' criticism of your goddess?

I know I couldn't sail single handed around the southern ocean.
I don't think many here could, I'm certainly not qualified to judge,

Quite simply, I think she did rather well.

It isn't goddess worship.

Re: Knockers, Trolls and Existensialism

With all this knocking of knockers has anyone considered they're maybe Trolling and not Knocking.

I don't think that's the point Ian - very few on the forum have done other than offer the highest praise to Ellen and her achievment(s), but the, by now, over-hype of the whole effort, seems to have detracted from the achievment somewhat. I for one am a little tired of reading about Ellen McArthur on this site (tho' it sure beats some of the other drivel!), as it seems are many others. Sadly. the whole B&Q PR exercise seems to have overtaken the record as the number one objective of the exercise. Now, you cannot blame B&Q for maximising their association with the record, for they spent an awful lot of dosh. Neither can you blame Ellen for any such negative outcome, she did her job, along with her massive back up team, and did it better than any of us could (regardless of sailing experience). I fear any future such efforts may well go down the same route - massive expenditure, massive back up, hugely high tech boat, achievement of goal, huge PR overkill and eventual loss of interest in the main objective of the attempt in the first place. To a degree, this has been mirrored on this forum. Perhaps the RTW attempt by Gypsy Moth IV (if it happens) will be good to see after all - back to basics and all that......

Don't know if any of this makes sense to anyone else, but I know what I mean anyway!!.

Dear prime minister

i assume this was a joke?

if not....Our "dear prime minister" won power promising to adopt the spending plans of the previous govt, but now claims all the credit. As an exmaple of his actual skill in financial matters, the main and only thing he's actually been allowed full control of was his selling of his house in london at the start of the housing boom, and bought another right at the top. The other project that he held up for final approval prior to the 97 election was the Dome, of which the current deputy pm said that if they couldn't make a success of it they didn't deserve to be in power, or words to that effect.
