If I were an RNLI donor I would not be happy.

Bearing in mind she's 80m long, pretty immpressive seas (filmed nr Ushant)

They are really impressive. Mind you this one only has 13000hp; the Bourbon has 22000 hp.

Their primary official function is as lifeboats and anytime a storm is announced they head out to known trouble spots eg off Ushant to be already on the spot.

Sure trumps the Tamar ...:p

Incidentally a few years ago I remember the UK withdrew their sea-going tug from the Dover Straights area so the French now have to cover that as well.

I think there used to be 3. There was certainly one usually stationed in Mounts Bay, so I frequently saw it passing by. Operated by the MCA (I think), but decision made a few years ago to discontinue and leave it to the commercial salvage tug operators - a decision that may now have been reversed - does anyone here know?

Nope, the ETVs (emergency towing vessels) have gone. The Western Isles one may still be there up in Scotland, the local council did come up with some interim funding measures.

Some comments by chanelyacht made me think, should a perentage of the monies collected for lifeboat services by the RNLI be distributed to these organisations?

I would think that many people who donate would also like to support the many independent services who don't have the ability to collect with a National presence.

You never know where you or your loved ones might run into trouble on the sea and it could be in a region covered by an independent lifeboat.

Yes most certainly

I did wonder if it was just an idle rumour that I may have mis-heard that they were back again. (It may be that the same tugs ard now on station but with commercial operators)

I had a feeling that the Scottish one was still there, but wasn't sure so didn't mention it.

By the way, the photo is the Anglian Princess - I was trying to remember the name. That's St. Michaels Mount (yes, I know the French one's bigger and better) in the background. Sorry it's a bit hazy - we get a lot of that here!

And probably cheaper & better run too. :D

Amazing how wonderful these French are since the revolution. Pity that Wellington & Nelson were better & that they needed us & the Yanks to rescue them from the Germans twice.

You would probably answering this post in German if it hadn't been for the Channel.

I doubt if many would oppose the idea, however I supect they value their independance to much to accept (there may well be legal/constitutional reasons why it can't be done).

There are unlikely to be any legal or constitutional issues with RNLI offering financial support to independents provided it is within the stated aims and objectives, and it surely would be.

Politically however, on both sides, I suspect it would be a bit of a hot potato!

I seem to recall that the Cowes Independent lifeboat would be a good example of this...

Don't know what it is like now but at the time the RNLI 'took over' there was some very bad ill feelings.
