hi, found an old petrol engine but unable to identify it... can you help.

single cylinder watercooled two stroke, dynamo, rope start, cylinder is very rounded including the head. four screws into the flywheel (at the front) to hold on the ally rope guide. carb on the left side (when viewed fron front) got something like" VIVE" or "VOVE", Vire?? on a plate.

anyone know if the thing'll be anygod for my oyster launch, or iv'e also got a volvo-penta twin cylinder diesel, 'box etc. but again don't know what it is. could it be MD11C? are they all twins? looks quite small.

i know sod all about engine codes on marine engines (i'll add that on to the long list of things i know sod all about), so someone with a bit of knowlege welcome.

willing to have a go at either as they're priced right /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

regards, steve.

ok.

i thunked that the diesel would've been a better choice.

cheers for that. now all i have to do is to find out what the volvo-penta is.. power output etc. anyone know where the engine plate usually lives?

regards, steve.

the petrol engine is a VIRE. Watch the electrics as they had dynastarts, which were prone not to!

The MD11 is a better bet, as it is a twin and rugged. Volvo spares tend to be expensive

The smaller volvo diesels are rarely made by volvo. Have a look at the crankcase on the inlet side of the head. Whats cast into the block?

Surely if it's got a dynamo and rope start it won't have a Dynastart?

Spares are still available as far as I know and it's built like a privvy so shouldn't be worn out. Why not try it?

Why don't you set the Vire up on a couple of bearers, start it and see how it runs. You'll have to have your water hose running water thro' it slowly to keep it cool. If it runs OK and you're happy with hand start, try it, it's a fairly lightweight engine compared to the VP diesel. But the Vire only about 7HP whereas the VP diesel is about 14HP?? - not sure on Volvo's.

it's almost certainly siezed, so probably not worth the price of a rebore and piston. plus the VP is probably gonna be taken out by someone else... saving me another job.

anyway iv'e talked myself into the diesel, i just need to get a shaft sorted... mike bellamy's on it already.

cheers for the replies, PS. i reserve the right to change my mind..... now where did i use it last?....
