Not for Channel ports, but certainly for inland waterways in France, I believe.

You can go into ports and into the estuaries but not into the river system for example

St Malo you can go as far as the barrage before you need ICC docs as well as proof of purchase, registration docs etc etc.

Unlikely to be asked to produce it in coastal ports unless local officials take a particular dislike to you (mind you, the way President Blair is upsetting his French opposite number........) You certainly will be asked for it, with other ship's papers when going inland eg at the first lock on the Seine.

Re: to clarify

You are NOT required to have ICC on own boat on coastal waters in France.

You are required to have ICC +CEVNI endorsement in French waterways on own boat.

all these qualifications are dead easy.

renting: You WILL be require to present ICC if renting boat over 6hp in french coastal waters.
If you haven't got an ICC, but talk yourself into renting a boat anyway, then when you smash the boat into the fuel pontoon and rip lumps off the hull and bash the outdrive leg quite hard, you lose the deposit

deposit-loser alert

Methinks the last sentence was not at all hypothetical, but an accurate description of real-life deposit-losing incident....?

Re: deposit-loser alert

Perhaps. My mate me that he had small kids at the time and gort very sloshed. So sloshed that he stopped duting the day and went and got some more wine.

Then, he finished all the minimum 4 bottles of wine and drove back into port. For some reason he got it into his head that he needed to put some fuel in, but cocked it up, then accelerated, then the boat lurched forward, he (sloshed) fell back and the boat zoomed around the walls (take hlb's small marina diagram, empty all boats out, boat in question pointing downwards, and just throttles ahead - the boat WILL come out through the two right angles no problem without bowthruster, no problem.)

The moral of the tale is that it is a v good idea getting very sloshed if you are going to do this, cos you will be nice and relaxed about it afterwards, he says.

Re: to clarify

Suggest you need to recognise the difference between what you are required to have and what you may be asked for. Since when have the French felt bound by the rules? Two acquaintances have been asked for their ICC along with other papers in small Channel ports. And as David J suggests, arguing with French officialdom is a recipe for disaster, even if you are in the right.

Has this been shared before?

Privately yes...publicy not sure.

TCM is actually covering up for a mutual mate who did same-ish thing,

Having proferred aforementioned ICC to well-known Charter company, at end of day returning boat to La Nap.

Engaged 'Backwards', throttles got stuck (again)....rendez-vous between stern and plastic tub. Gasso - geezer last seen disappearing as pontoon 'moves'.

Mate's husband sulks , phones rental company and refuses to move boat due sticking throttles. All deposits recovered due mate's ability to scream en francais. This story obviously attributable TCM, therefore ICC still valid.

P.S. No booze involved allegedy , total incompetence is a much better(true) story. Only child involved is son who is drinking his way through uni with suitable embellishments to faction above..... A Blair eat your heart out.....

Re: ICC more

Why would anyone want to cross the channel to French coastal waters without first receiving proper training anyway. Would be daft methinks

Re: to clarify

So if I'm renting a holiday boat on the inland waterways, I don't need ICC, but if I buy a boat out there and run it up the river, I do. All seems a bit "Royale with cheese"...
