I too have a concern

A young friend of mine has during the past twelve months undertaken his Yachtmaster Practical examination. Whilst to all intents and purposes he passed, since then there have been grave concerns, within the inner rectum of RYA House, over his conduct as a Practising Yachtmaster. Without wishing to divulge sensitive information, I have been approached to carry out an impartial observation as to his conduct afloat, following rather alarming reports concerning his tendency to sleep. Naturally this is a disturbing matter for the RYA as it could well devalue the award and as reference has already been made to this sorry state of affairs both in this forum and in the excellent article which recently appeared in YM - the Mandarins are keen to resolve the matter promptly and satisfactorily.
It was suggested that a cruise of a duration of not less than 4 days should suffice and present the opportunity to carry out the observation. This was duly arranged and a crew has been assembled. To my dismay I now learn that my young friend has decided to jump ship and without a by-your-leave has chartered a boat - albeit in Scottish waters for the duration of the intended observation. Readers will be astonished to learn - as I was - that my young friend has stooped so low as to lay blame upon his dear lady wife by saying that it was at her insistence, that he took this line of action, as she could not bear to be parted from him for such a length of time and that it has always been her wish to sail in Scottish Waters since he returned safe home from his last venture with me regaling her with tales of beautiful scenery and sun kissed waters. It would appear he didn't stray onto the tender subject of that pretty little thing that served our suppers at Croabh Haven. If scurrilous were a word in my vocabulary, it would be the one I would use now to describe the actions of the young man in question.
My friends, You know I am a man quick to forgive and I will do my utmost to carry out my duties of observation from the decks of the good yacht Claymore - and have this very day been in touch with messrs Steiner to enquire about their products, but I ask for your support in the condemnation of my young friend's actions. In addition - in my shoes, would you feel compelled to inform the charterers of the decidedly dangerous situation they may have inadvertantly become involved in?

Just been playing around with the ITU "Call Sign" register linked to another post. I notice that there is a vessel on there going by the name of "Claymore Complex". Could this be Jimi's aforementioned charter, or does it belong to another past "Claymore" crew member?

Things are complex enough, its enough to give me a complex and doesn't all this vhf stuff sound so complex - it was bad enough when they used duplex - why couldn't we stick with simplex?

I'd rather have a tinnie of four X myself.

I think that the idea of writing your call sign on a big cloth has got a lot going for it, and maybe going back to signal flags. Take so long to get the flag equivalent of a radio check that people wont bother and that'll solve another problem.

Re: me too

mm I quite agree.. I have found evidence that he talks to himself.. he apparently thinks this is OK.. now I hate to be picky but aren't skippers s'posed to be of sound mind etc.. have to say evidence points to the contrary.. rumour has it that he will be escorted by his minder in a Sadler 29 that goes by the name of Wild Honey.. I think it may be safer to "observe" from another yacht! If you wish I can arrange to bug Wild Honey prior to the "observation" period..this should pick up any snoring that occurs and also soliloquies

I suspect that yer main concern is how dear heart will react! Here am I displaying a worthy sense of responseebeeleety, refusing to engage in high jeenks, but nevertheless .. (note the use of full stops saved elsewhere) at conseederable cost to masell .. steel in attendance , albeit in an adult fashun. I see masell as the responsible adult looking after a bunch of nice but irresponsible hooligans. Bev, after the tales of culinary misfortune last year has kindly consented to attend to oversee that dietary provision. I will bring an alarm clock and a spare pillow though.

"For that weary saior's head
tired with crashing crest and dumping billow
all he wants is bed
and a nice warm soft pillow"

i understand that your friend has indeed chartered a vessel. given the demanding and, not to say, challenging itinerary for this upcoming event, he thought it best to chose a vessel well used to the area and consulted with CalMac on an appropriate vessel. With the comfort of us all in mind, here it is:

your immediate thought may be 'ah well, whaes tae stoke ra boilers?' but she was converted to run on gas.

hope this helps

Oh and did I mention that the charter vessel has a working Eberspacher .. not that this was an influence in any shape or fashion .. on the down side, there is no tumble drier.

Re: Re holding tank & Webcam

Should I suggest to Alba that they want to fit one for your young friend? I will personally undertake the rigging of webcams and have requested special kit!

Re: Re holding tank

I'm really doubting whether we see my young friend - he's bound to linger in the wide-mouthed frog and then should he get the tides correct and not end up under Connel Bridge I don't see him making it past the Corran Halls.
Should he manage to do so he's almost certainly going to run through the "Ah, now let me show you this my dear - this is the spot where I was awarded the All Scotland Standing Leap of Faith and where single-handedly and to the utter amazement of Para and the Old Goat, I connected us to the pontoon at Oban Yachts - they talk of it yet you know, lets go and see...." That will prove his undoing as we never paid for our stop there so the wee mannie is bound tae be incarcerated

The one benefit to all of this is of course that it frees up foom on the good yacht Claymore
d'ye fancy a few days wi Para an masel, lassie?

I will be on watch for Claymore!.. that is when I'm not glued to the screen watching the webcam antics on Wild Honey.. just hope the wireless Webcam doesn't interfer with the Wireless log and depth instruments.. could make for some "interesting" navigation!
