Then clearly you're paying too much for the new one.

No such thing as something for nothing, they're funding the extra on yours from somewhere...

Ari, of course they have, but who cares how the cake is cut up. So long as the bit I have to pay for is as little as possible I'm happy! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: I should wait.!... I should wait..?.. but I don\'t want to!!

Go and have a bl**dy look, get the thing out of your imagination and into the real world.Have a play and then go home and think about it for 24 hours.
The boat in your mind is probably twice as big and 10 times better than your present boat in your mind BUT when you have had a good butchers and got all the pros and cons in front of you,you may decide its not worth it at the moment.
Have looked at loads of please take my money cannot live-without-boats until on that long drive back home.....Gulp that was close thing, mebbe best wait a bit..still worth a nice day out the Brighton
If you still want it a week later,however..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
PS Always worth putting your proposed total spend into Boatshop etc and seeing just how much more boat that money would buy without the broker trousering 10/15% of your dough and if he has that many customers lined up for your old tub,you will have no problem flogging it.

Re: I should wait.!... I should wait..?.. but I don\'t want to!!

Bloody good point. I hope it shrinks when I see it... that will save a few quid!

I will go some point this week and report back!

Thanks for all the comments from everyone.

Some have actually made me think. Others have made me shoot emails across to my Financial Advisor /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

It is a nice boat, and I know the guys at Dickies Brighton well and they're great to do business with. You will know when you've seen it again. BTW I have 2 Nanni 200's on my boat and it's a great engine. Economical and reliable. Have fun.

Re: I should wait.!... I should wait..?.. but I don\'t want to!!

Put is this way................

The average life expectantcy of a male in the UK is 76 years of age.

Lets assume you are 50.

The last year of your life you will spend sucking your food through a straw.

2 years before that you will be peeing yourself, wearing nappies and a protate the size of a beach ball.

2 years prior to that you will have banjaxed knees and can't lift your legs more than 12" off the floor.

6 years you will spend asleep.

7 years you will be at work.

2 years you will spend trailing after SWMBO buying shoes, clothes and handbags along with food shopping, visiting elderly relatives and looking after your grand kids.

3 years you will spend watching TV, reading, eating, having sex, driving to and from work and siting on the toilet.

Mate......... you have 36 months of boating time left before its lights out and the game is over .

Go buy the bloody thing /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: I should wait.!... I should wait..?.. but I don\'t want to!!

If it's "I can't afford it" in that the extra 14k for the purchase price will have to come from auctioning off family heirlooms and postponing holidays / car upgrades as appropriate, I would say - go for it.

If there is any doubt in your mind about not being able to afford it in terms of the running costs, I would say hold tight.

It's like buying a car - people get hung up on what the dealer is offering on their current model in a partex deal, but what only matters in the difference you are being asked to pay.

Re: I should wait.!... I should wait..?.. but I don\'t want to!!

Buy quickly, we may all be dead from Swine Flu by the end of summer. If you can afford it then having a new boat is pretty cool!

Re: I should wait.!... I should wait..?.. but I don\'t want to!!

Hi
I was cruising at around 15 notts and max 19 last week with a dirty bottom and a big lump of weed round the bow thruster area. (realy must get her out for a good scrub).

Only two problems and both self induced. First was forgetting to "burp" the drive shaft seal when putting her back in the water, the other was a loose earthlead see RNLI thankyou post today.

Hi Bob, yes, saw that post... if that's all the problems you have had, well that's one good reason to buy a mass produced boat!

If you cruise at 15knots with loads of weed, I think my guesstimate of 16knots cruise is about right...

I don't think running costs will be that different from what I have at the moment, so not worried about that... its the fact I shouldn't really have been looking at a used 760....but could scrape the money together, a new Antares 8... well that will take a bit more scraping, and possibly some peeling to!

Re: I should wait.!... I should wait..?.. but I don\'t want to!!

Each to his own, but I think the absolute key to enjoying your boating is that you can do so without any sense of financial panic. Sure, who knows what tomorrow brings, so factor in any "loss", if you like if things turn sour. But if you are concerned about costs before you own it, dont do it, and enjoy what you have. There will ALWAYS be a bigger boat ! If the numbers look OK (well, as OK as they can do in this hobby!), then I m sure you will find the bigger boat a big improvement.
Still, does it have to be a new one, or are you just being lured by an advert?

Re: I should wait.!... I should wait..?.. but I don\'t want to!!

I am in your age group. If I could afford the up grade I would do it. But have you had a look wants on the second hand
Market you may get more boat for your money.

Re: I should wait.!... I should wait..?.. but I don\'t want to!!

Gavin, that's the trouble, I wanted a used 760, but everyone is asking circa £45k for those if they are 4 years old+, any newer and then they are £50k+, now I know that is the asking price and most sellers would take an offer but this Antares 8 I have been offered is getting too close to the price of these used 760's to make a 760 a sensible purchase...

....however a bit of digging has revealed a couple of 2003 760's in Jersey which (if still available, still waiting for a call back from the brokers...!) are £30k & £33k, they also have a MF 805 for £35k. Now I am sure I will need to pay the VAT when I bring back to the mainland..??? but that is the sort of price which would sway me away from new 8 to a used 760 for the time being as that is what I was wanting to find in the first place.

Re: I should wait.!... I should wait..?.. but I don\'t want to!!

Firefly,

In the current climate there are great deals out there. Just consider if this Antares 8 will last you more than a few years. If you expect it to be OK for more than 2/3 years and you can finance it...go for it. The Antares are great boats and by buying a new model you will minimise depreciation if you have to sell it.

Better a new model than a 7 year old one!

Paul :)

Re: I should wait.!... I should wait..?.. but I don\'t want to!!

Hi Paul

...just when I have talked my way right round from used to new and swaying back to used you go and post this. It would mean me financing it for probably a maximum of 3 years.... in the big scheme of things 3 years ain't that long....

another question for you, at what point do I tell SWMBO what I am planning?
