I need a new Calorifer

Norfolk Marine have now sent me an e mail cancelling my order because I refused to accept additional delivery charges. I didn’t actually refuse and they never told me on the phone how much it would be. I merely pointed out that the front page of the website says free and it brought up delivery charge £0 when I entered the address and postcode. I replied to them but I think I may well be starting another thread looking for advice about how to pursue a consumer complaint in the U.K.

Just looked at their website and the only get out clause I can see for them is if they class it as "other heavy or bulky items", although I wouldn't myself.

They exclude "Highlands and Island", Ireland is an island :)

They do, from dealing with them myself, class a calorifier as bulky and would charge post even if it was a "normal" UK address. That is, IMO, a little misleading and there is no excuse for being rude.

It doesn’t really matter whether it’s bulky or highlands/Islands. I selected the calorifer and inputted the delivery address at checkout and got a £0 quote for delivery. If the item or address were ineligible this shouldn’t have happened. They took payment from my credit card and confirmed the order online and called me later looking for delivery fees. Amateur hour and it’s a pity because from accounts on here they are probably a decent enough outfit overall.

After a further exchange of e mails including a link to this thread Norfolk Marine have confirmed my order will be dispatched at no extra cost. It’s a pity they spoiled what should have been a good customer experience but at least they’re now doing the right thing.

I do understand completely, which is why i said "a little misleading". Hopefully they'll make some changes on the website. Good to see they've sorted things out for you now though :encouragement:

Thanks again to all for their help.
It could well be argued that Northern Ireland is the only part of the U.K. which isn’t an island. It’s only a bit of an island - add smileys as you see fit.

No smileys but I'm pleased that you got it sorted, and that Norfolk Marine responded as I hoped they would. Good luck with the calorifier from here on.

Can I ask why you needed a new one? I have heard of a few that failed by perforation of the coil, with direct experience of one. I replaced mine when I wanted to add an immersion heater but found it impossible to remove the blank that had been in place for about 15 years.

Glad to hear you sorted the delivery problem.

I collected my Surecal Calorifier from Ireland and I'm back in Turkey ready to go to work. The instructions say I need to fit an expansion tank. As far as I can see the old system which had exactly the same plumbing arrangement didn't have one. Is it really necessary?
Second question. The hot and cold hoses in the boat are hard plastic and there's no way they'll fit over the copper nipples on the heater. Should I try heating them or is there a better way of doing it. As always, all advice greatly appreciated.

(1) In a wholly new hot and cold water system with a 22l Surecal, I fitted a 2l expansion tank on the cold side, although in theory the ParMax pump I used may not have needed it, and the system works well.

(2) To my initial confusion, the copper ‘nipples’ as you describe them on my Surecal were not barbs for a flexible hose, but much shallower-ribbed brass fittings for a suitable pipe coupler – I used John Guest Speedfit piping and fittings throughout (hot and cold) and the right coupler worked fine.

If (as I strongly suspect) that is also the case with your Surecal, and your existing system uses hoses not rigid pipes, you would either need to replace the ‘nipples’ with suitable hose barbs, or contrive to join your hoses to coupler fittings which will fit the existing ‘nipples’. But if your 'hard plastic hoses' are in fact plastic water pipes not 'hoses', my solution should work for you - you would just need to get the right coupler for your plastic pipes.

I hope that’s reasonably clear, and helps!

PS I'm sorry but not being on the boat I cannot check the plastic pipe coupler fitting I used but I think it was the first one shown here - an ordinary 'equal straight' of the right size, for my plastic plumbing pipe.

The expansion tank should be fitted to the hot system, as close to the tank as practicable.

Paul - I may have been referring to an accumulator tank (http://www.surejust.co.uk/accumulator-tanks) which (I believe - not being aboard!) is on the cold side, and the only tank in my simple system.

I would however assure the OP about my recollection of my experience with the calorifier connections - I am absolutely certain that I mistook the 'nipples' on the Surecal for hose barbs, and Surecal put me right!
