Hi Peter!

Yep! Owned one for over five years and was totally in love with her. One of the best balanced boats you'll sail and a good steady passage maker. We regularly averaged around six knots on the longer trips (Southern Brittany etc) and it was very unusual to get less than five. Whilst we once had 8 1/4 knots under spinnaker, the older design of hull with it's fine ends limits the speed much quicker than a modern hull shape, so she'll go so far then 'squat' ahead of her quarter wave.

This same hull shape does result in less interior volume than modern boats, but for my money, as a 'relatively' cheap yacht, they take some beating. Holman and Pye are one of my favourite designers and the mouldings were well and heavily built, certainly well in excess of todays typical scantlings. Check whether the one you're considering has been home finished, as many were, and as usual, the standard varies. I could go on, but much along the same lines. I was very sad to see mine go but wanted, with a growing family, something a liitle bigger.

Hope you get a good one and have as great a time as we did with ours.

Good sailing.

I have never owned or sailed one but I know there are 2 boats with the same name. The newer one is more of an out and out racer .The older one is a beautiful looking boat with a good name as a fast cruiser.

Are you looking for a Holman & Pye Hustler 30 or a Stephen Jones Hustler 30, often known simply as an SJ30?

The former is a lovely, classic, late sixties cruiser racer with sweet lines, good all round performance but nothing exceptional these days. Accommodation is tiny by today's standards and was pretty small by those of the late sixties.

She was flat-out racer in her day and many will have been thrashed quite hard. The interiors of unrefurbished ones will be wearing out and a complete refit may be in order. However, they are basically pretty tough so worth the effort.

The SJ30 was also a flat-out racer but of a different generation and is much more of a handful. The interior has more space, however, and she is quicker on all points. All Stephen Jones designs are well balanced on the helm. Launched in 1970, she was revised in 1972 with a few more cruising comforts - such as an inboard engine as standard. A lovely boat but maybe a bit hairy

Continuing the Hustler 30 (Holman & Pye) thread; I have been offered an XM (deeper lead keel) version for £19,000 and want to know if this is a fair price. The boat is well known to me and I have sailed her safely in extreme conditions. She is in very good condition, has been meticulously maintained and is well equiped, though could do with some up-dating - roller furling genoa, windlass &c. An acurate inventory appears below. Does anyone have any thoughts on the price and/or a sensible offer?
