Hiya all,

I am considering first yacht purchase and one of my shortlisted yachts is the Hustler 30 (not sj30) and wondered what experiences forumites may have of this yacht. On paper she is the idea size I would like to aim for and they are roughly the right price for my budget- by all accounts they race well too. My use for the yacht would be a mixture of club racing and short handed cruising and sheer love of ownership......

If you have experience of sailing one or have in fact owned one I would like to hear your thoughts- Obviously any defects that you know about also would be good to know at this juncture......

Many thanks

H.M

hustlers are upwind boats, they sail _differently_ to AWB's, not necessarily better in all conditions

similar to Hustler 35's and if made by the same builder, Tyler's, probably well built - H35 info here...

Hustler 30.

I have a hustler 30 for sale, not advertised yet but looking for aprox 13,750. She has just had her topsides done with Awlgrip in dark blue, looking really good. New Main 2010, new jeckles main mate 2011, genoa good condition. Nav electrics replaced with new 2011 (due to theft over the winter).
If you are still looking she is worth a look. great peformance and classic looks. A very good sea boat. I am looking for something else as the family grows.. View attachment 12498

Hustler 30

Hi,

I'm a Hustler owner.

I sailed from Gosport to Alderney and back last weekend and averaged a little over 5 kts in the relatively light winds. The Hustler is very sea kindly and have sailed mine in F8 without too much of a problem and being in danger of upsetting some of our fellow postees I would say that her sea keeping qualities are not found in modern round bottom mass produced sailing yachts until they are considerable larger (40 ft?).

There are two types of keel available a stubby cruising keel and the deeper fin – from your description I suggest you make sure that you buy the latter. Down below there are two layouts the dinette style and the more traditional long berth. Some Hustlers were fitted out at home so the quality can vary, but the best ones (I’m biased) were generally fitted out by Landamores of Wroxham.

Her main downside, as all boats are compromises, being relatively narrow (i.e. her good sea keeping ability) and having her fine lines means she can be cramped down below - more than three adults becomes a crowd. But if I wanted comfort over performance I would have put a mast on my arm chair. However there is plenty of storage. Due to her age my Hustler did required (and still does down below) some modernisation.

I am not particularly one for aesthetics, but to my surprise strangers keep coming up to me and saying that they like her lines. I’ve never met a previous owner who does not have a soft spot for this class and their sailing qualities and most past owners (as others on this post) say that changed boat for more space down below.

I know another recent post is trying to set up a class association for all Hustlers.

Good luck,

Chris
