Hunting debate.....nb

That day! Given the chance they will return and take every chicken carcass and bury it for later leaner times! Fact!

As for the other animals you mention - I very much doubt you'd get much support on your 'fun' theory - it may be sexual aggression, or hunting practice, or even experimentation [is that nice to eat?] but I don't reckon they do it for 'fun'!

As for your last point - agree entirely - the trouble is I'm currently refitting the utility room, so Im' taking my frustrations out here!! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Re: Fox\'s are in favour of hunting.

Halal killing of animals for food was a command of the Prophet Mohammed.

The reason - because at the time, 1500 years ago, it was the quickest and least painful available. This was at a time when skinning alive was not uncommon.

Maybe there were many then who regarded it as an infringement of there rights.

Re: Language

Nick,

You're working yourself into a lather, I was merely responding to your 'that old chestnut' statement. I apologise for my loose use of the word fun and should have used the word 'sake'.

Still, enjoy your utility room.

Chris

Re: Language

And I reckon if I post now I could have the last word. Which, after much reflection I think should be Belgium.

Maybe Tony Blair should offer a referendum to the fox community about this ban. Latest figures from Scotland show foxes killed year before ban 550-killed year after ban 990! Redundant foxhounds dispatched 350. This not about hunting per se but about the rabid class divisions that still exist in these otherwise fair isles. I wonder why is hunting, in all it's various forms, is embraced in the Catholic but not Protestant countries.

Oh yeah, Ireland and the Irish are famous for embracing hunting in all its forms - whereas we all know that the all north Germans would never hurt a fly. Hmmmm.

I don't know if this has been said before in this thread as it's such a long one and I haven't read it all.

There are two things which I find extraordindary about fox hunting. Why does it take a dozen sometimes 20 or so men and women on horseback, in faqncy dress, together with dozens of hounds - plus all the back rooms boys (kennel hands etc), to kill one fox.

Secondly, I do understand that in certain areas foxes MAY need to be culled. But what I find abhorrent is that human beings turn this into a sport and actually ENJOY chasing, hounding, terrorising and killing a creature which is only doing what nature intended. As for the smearing the faces of 'virgin hunters' with the blood of these creatures - im speechless

Re: Democratic process

I am all in favour of democracy. The alternative excludes me. Don't care about fox hunting. Do as you damn well please. Don't like pheasant shooting, they put down little fences to make the birds fly.

The democracy does'nt like fox hunting, put up with it.

Hmmm. Hundreds of posts about fox hunting on a yachting forum. It proves wot it's all about - politics! This 'killjoy' policy has gained lots of political attention. The government don't care how foxes are killed - they're not particularly interested in animal rights. Their main interest is getting votes (no surprises there, it's wot a democratic government has to do). My twopennurth: why ban hunting when factory farming is condoned. British agriculture is an international joke with Salmonella, F&M, BSE, Setaside, Militant Ramblers etc etc

Re: Democratic process

Acshully I'm ain't really bothered about this .. just find it fascinating that both camps get so wound up.. although on balance I do'nt like cruelty however the folowing stats may prove interesting souggesting that foxes are actually more of a pest where the hunting tradition is strongest .. leading to the question .. are they a pest besause they are "preserved" for the hunt ..

British Farming - Where are Foxes a Problem?

MOST FARMS SUFFER NO FINANCIAL LOSS TO FOXES
87% in Scotland
70% in northern England
63% in southern England
57% in Wales and western England (3)
75% of the UK land area is in agricultural use. 25% of this area is under crops. (1) Much of the remaining land is used for dairy and beef production. (2) The fox can in no way be regarded as a pest on arable, dairy or beef farms. Foxes may even be beneficial by virtue of their diet of small mammals and rabbits which can damage crops and reduce available grazing. NOP Market Research obtained 892 responses to a questionnaire of farmers in the early 1970s. (3)
70% of all farmers did not believe the number of foxes on their farms was harmful
64% of all farmers suffered no financial loss from damage proven to have been caused by foxes
2% claimed losses of more than £100 per year (in 1974) from damage that was attributed to foxes
36% of farmers considered foxes to be useful in controlling rabbits and rodents

Bothered by this

main reason i am bothered is the amount of efffort spent on it. Then they call it "running the country". whreas in fact it's of hardly any interest, relative er ,well, erm getting this thread past 300

tolerance and understanding

i agree. But what happens? - instead of talking the matter out sensibly, the fox runs off yet again, which is obviously a total windup to the hounds...

Re: tolerance and understanding
