Can anyone confirm our understanding of the following hull identification number from a Moody 40

OA5/PJY/79

We are assuming the 79 at the end refers to the year the hull was completed, thus it is a 1979 boat, are we correct in this assumption?

Thanks.

Are you sure that's the HIN and not a Yard Number? HINs are normally 12 characters, I think.

The HIN system came out a bit later than 79 iirc. Befire that they all used their own system. The MOA advice is goid.

Yes, HINs did not become compulsory until 1997, but many builders particularly in the US used them from the 1980s on.

That Moody number will be an internal identification and follow their own method, so MOA is the first place to ask. However, at this time and distance it is rather meaningless. The boat is what it is (or what subsequent owners have turned it into) so knowing the yard identification serves little useful purpose.

The number you quote has nothing in common with the yard number or HIN on our '88 Moody. Suggest you phone Marine Projects for info. Remember that if it does identify the hull build, that could have been in stock for some time so not necessarily the year the boat was completed.

If MOA can't confirm note that Marine Projects is now Princess Yachts - but they still have some staff who remember building Moodys.
