Here in CYPRUS we are blanketed in what looks like FOG but in fact is DUST-not nice. Whats it like where you are? is it the same in CRETE?

It is called in Greek a Sconi (spelling) it is a wind normaly with South in it from the sahara, it brings cloud and red dust rain, it gets everywhere, normaly in May, but can (and does) happen anytime. The canaries call it the Sciroco. I can clean the car and patio, then the Sko ni arrives and everything is covered in ****, it does warm the air up though!

I was in Sliema Marina once and woke up to find the boat covered in red dust. Ah! from the Sahara the locals said. Big wash down and all cleaned up. Three days later and everything was covered in thick black/grey ash...Ah! wind's changed and Mount Etna has had a hiccup said the locals...

We had a Skhoni (σκονη) with lots of dust in Corfu, spring of 2012. Horrible. got at the back of my throat.

I think you'll find the Scots are above mere dust. Up there they have thumping great stones of sconi.

We used to get that in the Caribbean, Saharan dust, it could cut the vis to 2nm.

In Crete southerly winds comes from North Africa where they pick up lots (and lots) of sand, so rain on a southerly wind deposits lots of red sand on your decks (actually everywhere). Frankly I'm surprised there is any sand left in the Sahara!

It happens occasionally here in the Algarve- obviously when there's a bit more E in the wind. Today (Carnaval) the forecast is for 18º with some cloud.
