How low can you get?

Re: can you go lower ?

Can't provide a photo to prove it, but .......

Just after WWII I was a schoolboy living in Farnborough. Together with several others I had gone down to the main gate of the RAE to watch for anything new. Anyone who remembers the old RAE will know that the main gate is directly under the main runway approach, a couple of hundred yards from the threshold. Above the main gate was an electrical line, whether power or comms I don't know. A De Haviland Vampire came down on finals and went through the gap between the gate and the line, touched down on the grass on the far side of the gate, and opened up again, thus showering all the watchers with earth, grass, litter, etc. On making enquiries (via my father, who worked at RAE) I found that this was the first prototype Vampire, being flown by Geoffrey de Haviland. I doubt whether the gap was more than 12 ft high, and that's probably stretching things.

Re: can you go lower ?

Some years ago I was working with a crew removing the skid marks at touch down on the runway at Dubai. It was arranged that all incoming flights should land a bit further down the tarmac than usual. All went well for the first hour. Ear defenders on ,shot blast pots runnning, 2 600cfm Compressors belting out the power ...... but no one seems to have told the Kuwait Airlines Pilot that we are in his favorite landing spot. He must have eventually got a visual of us. I remember being blown off the runway complete with compressors and other bits and bobs. Try standing up behind a 747 on full power on emergency aborted landing ..........
