how far

how far is iow off the mainland? i need to deliver a powerboat but ferry cost is stupid.

Are you not able to read a map - or even a chart if you are going by sea?

If you are delivering a boat with a trailer, then you have no option but to use one of the many ferry routes - and yes they are expensive for the distance - if they weren't the island would be overrun with people!

There is a choice of 4 routes for car ferry, and you may be able to get one of the promotional fares if you are not fussed about time of travelling.

Depends on the route.

Lymington to Yarmouth about 3 miles

Hamble to Cowes about 5 miles

Portsmouth (entrance) to Ryde about 4 miles

Chichester ( entrance) to Bembridge about 8 miles

The ferry only cost about a tenner as a foot passenger. I'd much sooner pay that sum than swim back once I'd delivered the boat.

Have been known to tow a caravan form time to time, worked it out it was cheaper to take it to France than to the IOW. Including the fuel bill!

As for how far the crossing is, if you have to ask....

Oh yes he has other options - He could just leave the trailer strapped underneath the boat and take it over that way. Would save on the ferry :) but the crossing might be a bit slow

£1600 for truck and trailer is a bit more than a tenner!

How big is it??? I've never looked at ferry prices for towing, but I cannot believe that anyone with a caravan pays that sort of price to take it overseas!

Well you can take a motorhome of up to 15 metres in length from Southampton to Cowes for a bit over £200. It wouldn't let me add a trailer to that vehicle, but at almost 50 feet on its own, that's hardly surprising. It's already bigger than the average coach!

Based on the above, I very much doubt it costs anything like £1600 to take an articulated lorry across, and since you're not going to get anything much bigger on anyway, I can't see where that sum comes from.

Drive the boat over. Send the trailer across by ferry without a towing vehicle? Or even find a truck going across light with a driver who would like to make a few bob for himself by carrying your trailer?

Is Ryde passenger only? - don't go that far east - there be dragons there!

Yep. 'fraid so.

It only goes to Ryde pier then you'd not get a truck plus power boat and trailer on the train.
