Horny boat

Has anybody got a decent horn on their boat? Fairline, sealine etc have these 12v trucker-style jobs up top which look great, but rot and fart quietly after a while. Useless if you really really need to get attention, or make a real racket in fog. I packed it in and use a handheld air blaster for 8 quid, which lasts most of a season. But the commercial boats trawlery boats have proper hooters which can wake up all the trendies overlooking the Tames. Hwo do they work, or are they 240v?

Re: do the big ships with stripes use Fiamms?

They don't sound like it, cos then it's be a PRARP or WAH noise, and their very loud ANK noise seems different. And no I didn't have a BB512 but I do know what you are talking about.

My boat has a very impressive horn. VERY loud. If you're anyway near it on deck when it goes off, you can't hear anything afterwards due to the ringing in your ears. It's 24v and I think it's Italian.

Re: aha

oh do tell what it is. And where did it come from? Or are you on a cruise ship at the moment, and writing from the business centre? They probably have *sigh* a laser printer on board - and a collating photocopier too... er never mind, just let me know about the manuf/supplier of the horn.

Re: aha

I don't know offhand. I'll have a look when I get to the boat tonight. By the way, we've just taken a new mooring in Brighton for the summer - any suggestions on places to cruise ?

Yep thats the trouble Matt/ Your not getting full Steriofart effect cos you've got no puff in it. ave you thought of wireing it up to your holding tank. That should give it enough power.

Get a good head on it and Dont empty it for a couple of months. Pipe it to an old trumpet mounted on fly bridge with a tap to turn on when ready.

Dont know how much noise you'll make but you should get attention !!

Re: Farty boat

For gods sake don't mention bogs and holding tanks or you'll start Haydn off again on his specialist subject.

Don't say I did'nt warn you all the mention of bogs and holding tanks would start him off.

As it happens I am having trouble with my own horn at the moment but I think it is age related. My wife reckons it needs replaced but I wonder if it could be pumped up again with a good hard blow.

Re: aha

I took a mooring in Brighton but couldn't stick it for more than a year - its fine if you want to go shopping and doing stuff off the boat, but nowhere to go on the boat for the day without spending wads of cash on the red stuff!! Moved to the Solent in the end - more money to moor the boat but I get to use it now. Steve

Good luck, watch out for the Fr rozzers (I mean, pull over if you see a blue flashing light in the rear view mirror of the gulfstream)

Re: big ships with stripes

What's the relevance of the with stripes? I didn't have a 512 when I was 17 either, my parents were dead stingy.

Ignore the above, mind not in gear long week zzzzzzzzz doh. The answer to your q is: no, not all of them, only the ones with "Trevor 'n' Sharon" sunstrips or Wolfrace slot wheels

Re: Farty boat

Feeling a bit miffed as my flat overlooks the Thames but never mind I'll recover...

I'm not sure about the trawlers but the only way to get decent noise on our boats is to fit air horns (like you had on your mini when you were 17, or your BB512 or whatever). These have a horn bit but also a separate tiny compressor that connects to the horn bit via plastic air tube. They are v loud even on 12v, tho with a 1/4 sec delayed action as the compressor motor winds up to speed.

The standard fairline farters are junk like you say, becuz they create the sound from a diaphragm in the horn, which is much less noisy than an air horn when new and worse still when rusted/salted up. The air horns are not susceptible to salting/rusting.

Not sure 240v helps. This is not a high power application so you can get loud noise easily from 12v. Starting the genny would be a pain each time you wanted to avoid a collision (though in many boats the genny is louder than the horn), or you could use inverter (which as alluded to in post below on inverters, would be less messy if Haydn happens to be servicing the bog at the moment you press the horn button)

I have exactly the same problem. Boat is 3 years old and all I get is a croak unless I hit them. Have stripped them , removed all the rust even although they are described as being all stainless steel the bits inside are not.No difference even after hours of adjustment.I tried to put the insides out of an old Jaguar set inside but they are about 3 mm to big.I had a set of air horns on the last boat with the little compressor etc but they were pretty usless too

Heres a story that\'s bound to please

About a grand farting contests at 5h1tton-on-peas

Where people who's farts are largest and strongest

Compete in the sections for loudest and longest.

Which reminds me that when I was looking for a mega hooter for my sports boat, I discovered that the sort I wanted to fit (large and strong) would, according to the IRPCS have indicated the presence of some kind of ocean liner.

Apparently 'leisure craft' should carry a hooter which sounds like a winning entry in the farting contest.

IRPCS refer to the frequencies that are acceptable for tiddlers.
