One of our regular crew members has a medical problem with his ankles. Culmination of a hard career as a Wing Forward. He can walk ok once "warmed up" though is obviously stiff in his movements. His wife doubts if he will get holiday insurance for our imminent charter ex Rhodes. This may prevent him from coming and will have a dreadful effect on his morale and on us as he is almost our talisman.
Anyone know how we could approach this problem ? Surely people with more serious problems than this can get cover, or can they ?

Check around with different insurers, but wouldn't think it's a problem, unless he requires regular medical treatment. Know people who've had problems with epilepsy and heart trouble who've had no problem getting cover

There is never a problem unless you want to claim. If you dont mention the complaint and accept that if it needs treatment when away you will have to foot(excuse the pun) the bill no problem. Understandably Insurers object to paying out for known risks if they were unkown to them.

I don't think this will be a problem. No insurance will cover a pre-existing condition, but I don't suppose he is worried about needing emergency ankle treatment. So as long as he is honest he should be OK for cover on the rest of his anatomy.

Only that if he has an accident then he may need medical treatment etc. With stiff ankles he is less nimble on deck than he used to be and may therefore be more prone to slipping.
Obviously such things as holiday cancellation , legal fees etc would also be useful.

Insurance is compulsory with some holiday companies, had this problem with girlfriends father who is dying from small cell lung cancer and wanted to join the SKI generation and go on some expensive cruises. At 68 he knew he was dying but unlike most 68's he had a good idea when. With his regular visits to the hospital etc he also knew the rest of him was thoroughly checked out and OK. I managed to get him cover for cruises to the carribean & Med but larger excess for the med as the Insurers know that the Spanish have excellent health care but expensive. We may like to kid ourselves but we really are the poor relations for healthcare in Europe. The insurers appeared pragmatic and no extra premium which is probably realistic as I am aware of 2 relatives that believed themselves fit and came to visit him one he knew he was dying of cancer some 3 years ago and both are now deceased. He can no longer climb onto our boat but the cruise liners have good facilities and long (as an exRN) may he get the insurance that enables him to cruise!!

As ,ong as it is disclosed I doubt any problem. I have however drawn a blank on getting any travel insurance from SWMBO after her 5 suicide attempts - but even in this case most say they will cover once she has been discharged for two years - which will be in about three years time I suspect.
