HMS Fearless in the scrapyard (pictures)

Following a previous thread on our trip from Gent to Brugge, we passed the scrapyard again today so I took some more pictures about the HMS Fearless.

It is indeed sad to see such an impressive vessel being scrapped to pieces.

As we will probably pass the scrapyard multiple times this year I may post some more pictures showing the process from beginning to end.

I remember seeing her on exercise in the Med - working with (I believe) her sister ship Intrepid.
Maybe wrong though - it was a long time ago.

Sad though.

Sad, and the end of an era, especially for those who served on her. Time moves on, though.

Slightly OT, but why was the QE2 in Southampton on Monday? I t was incredibly poignant to hear her horn for the last time (I guess), and to hear the other ship salute her as she left.

Well are you surprised after all the skooshie created by Greenpeace over the scrapping of some freighters in Hartlepool....They are better than Gordon Brown for creating smoke and mirror effects....

Just imagine their publicity about scrapping a fighting ship.

There were also a number of Irish fishing boats, first ones of a batch of 35 that have to be scrapped due to the decline in the fishing fleet.

Not any more - Intrepid left a few weeks ago.

I served on her on the first commission for 16 months, ending up in Aden for 3 months when we withdrew, taking two trips to Bahrain with army vehicles and private boats.

My accommodation was right down aft on the stbd side, where the outside stairs accessed the side.

I was part of the flight deck crew, and luckily spent most of the time in air-conditioned flyco when at Aden.

Never did get a commissioning book /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
