Hi

We have a Hanse 370 and we're looking to enter the Round the Island Race later in the year. This is the first race we've entered our boat into and we're going for a simple ISCRS rating for the boat.

On the application from for the ISCRS rating it asks for the 'Empty Weight' of the boat and the 'Sailing Displacement' which it defines as the Empty Weight plus any additional items (non fixed items).

I have my boat's specification which states the 'Displacement' of the boat is 6.8 tons. Would this be the Empty Weight of the boat? And if it is, is there any way of working out the weight of the additional items to get the Sailing Displacement without actually weighing the boat or each of those items individually - I guess what I'm asking is, is there a generally agreed weight for those additional items for a boat of a particular size for teams that aren't serious racers?

I'm assuming the Sailing Displacement does not include the weight or the crew.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

One source:

Or you could even try the Hanse website.

ISC is not a serious handicap, so try a best guess. Empty weight will be the design weight. Then make a best guess for the additions - that will include sails, gear you've added, but not furnishings that came with the boat or crew weight.

I imagine the ISC have data on a few Hanse 370s which have competed in previous years anyway.

If you were going for an Endorsed IRC Cert you'd have the boat weighed, but that's a different game really.

Can't speak for the Hanse and mine is a rather different boat but as an example...

Design Displacement from the boat specifications: 3400Kg. Actual weight from a crane load cell: 3900Kg.

The difference comes down to the weight of sails, anchors, fuel, water, cooking equipment, booze, tins of food, warps, chain, fenders etc. etc. etc.

From Island sailing club rating website , where I guess you got the form

Empty Weight
Empty weight is the weight of the boat in dry condition, fully rigged with all standing rigging, and spars
(including spinnaker pole(s)). It includes all permanent fixtures and fittings, batteries, main engine
installation, or outboard engine aboard in stowed position, but excludes all loose gear. If rated to a class
standard rating, her standard fit out may be used.
Displacement
Displacement is empty weight with the addition of items such as running rigging, sails, anchors, chains,
warps, and loose gear, together with adequate fuel and water, which puts the boat in racing trim.

As an IRC measurer I would interpretate "loose gear " as anything not bolted or otherwise attached permantly attached , excluding hatch boards .

weight wise manufacturer weights are often country miles out . likewise travel hoists and crane gauges .

as for weight of sailing kit allowed in addition for displacement , you could do that in a hoist or whatever weighing mt then loaded and subtracting as relatively the extra weight will be the same (near enough) wether base weight is correct or not.

Doubt anyone would keep allowance data for equip versus size of boat , but hey , you never know .

Good luck

and error in crane load cell I would expect .

Thanks for the replies

It was also mentioned on the Hanse forum that the manufacturer weight of the boat can be as much as a ton lighter than the 'empty weight' relevant for ratings. It sounds like if you do not actually weigh your boat then working out the empty weight and the sailing displacement is a pretty imprecise science, perhaps closer to guess work than anything else!

yup you got it in one !!!

dats why in irc most racers will /should weigh their boats , if not you generally end up punitively handicapping yourself , interesting to note that some cruiser racers , empty weight can differ by 1 ton in same class of boat , im told .

not many (if any ) boats are lighter than manufacturers data .

It also helps if you're friendly with other owners of the same class. OD racing is the simplest of handicaps, so if you can cajole the relevant info from a buddy, and use the same measurements on your submission/declaration, it will mean that you'll at least be able to rest assured that when he is behind you at the finish, he actually IS behind you!
