Hi,

First post on here!
My dad is thinking of buying a "swede 38" (not sweden 38)
I do not know anything about this boat at all, and before he parts with his very hard earned cashed (and i mean it he deserves it) what do you think of this yacht?
Has anyone heard of this yacht before?
What kinda price would you pay in the uk for one (roughly)

anyone sailed one?
How do they sail?
How seaworthy r they?

thanks, hope you can help.

kind regards

simon

Welcome to the forum, I am sorry that no one has been quick to respond, which would imply that this is not a very well known type of boat, or you have not got the name right, if you could find out a few more details and post them, someone may be able to assist. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

There is a Swede 38 for sale at S.D Marine at Port Hamble, very fine creature, part finished internally. Great heavy weather boat and probably a wet ride. A large Contessa? except built by the Germans, East Germans, so that will be ok. S.D Marine had a lot of info on the boat, give them a call.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply Talbot and PIGLETSDREAM, i think your right my dad thought this would be a wet boat to sail. (sounds good fun!)
It is the one at S.D Marine, your right, down below is in a right mess to be honest.
she also fell of her cradle, she has had a new mast and the topside's resprayed but i don't really know the extend of the damage, she also had her keel removed to replaced keel bolts. (but..there must of been some major damage if the insurance company paid for this.)
The woodwork inside is very poor, it all seems to move and i think this is due to the boat falling over?
I have seen two other swede 38's for sale for 45000 euro's, however the one at sd marine is 45000 pounds, it seems over priced, what do you think?
To bring this yacht up to an ok spec i worked out about £5000, and thats nothing fancy, it's missing, everything, not even a cooker!

the swede 38 was designed by Elvström & Kjaerulff, also based on the aphrodite 101 which seems to be a cheap boat? what do you think of these designers?
Her rigging does seems very powerfull, what kinda speed do you think we could get out of her?

Here's the other one for sale..

its 86 as well wheres the one at hamble is 81.

all rather interesting, dont you think!

thanks for your help, keep up the good work!

cheers

simon

In a few words - I would walk away from that one - FAST

Keep looking - there are lots of similiar sized boats out there cheaper. Leaves dad with some pocket money for kitting out.

If you think the idea of a wet boat is fun go stand in a cold shower for a couple of hours tearing up £20 notes - same result - cold, wet, broke and regretting it..........

Whilst it is perfectly possible to repair this sort of damage, it does not sound like it has been done completely. Maybe it's structurally sound, but if the joinery is not up to scratch it does not bode well for the main repair, so I too would walk away.

<hr width=100% size=1>my opinion is complete rubbish, probably.

You might be right, i don't know, if we do go ahead, we will of course get a survey done to check for problems in the hull, but if anyone can answer my other questions i would be greatfull!
the real questions are - is it really worth the 45k? I am thinking for like 30k to be honest what you think?

It has been for sale for about a year, so well over priced, but thats for anothr forum. Simple answer put in a silly offer subject to survey. Chap in our marina bought a Westsail 9 month ago, been for sale for about a year, offered 15k below asking stc and survey. If you have the time it could be made into a cracking boat, if you want to sail straight away, look else where. What about the compis 345 at SD?

Any boat is only worth what someone is prepared to pay. To some she might be worth 45K but from you description, for me she would be worth sod all - 25 ~ 20K tops but that is if I was looking at her. Some one else comes along and says - "she is worth 35K to me" OK no problem - you pay what you think she is worth to you and be done with it but please don't pay 45K - she really is over priced at that rate IMO.

PIGLETSDREAM - thankyou!!
Your right if i was to put in the hard work and effort it would be a nice boat, but that compis really outshines, down below seem's like the mirabella 5 compared to the swede!
I'll speak with my dad and tell him your thoughts.

thanks for your help, how do you reckon she sails?

We looked at the Compis (Odette of Stour??) at SD and was initially impressed. However there were a few things that put us off:

Collapsing headlinings
Strange aft cabin sleeping arrangements
Dark, gloomy interior
Generally not well suited to singlehanding/ a couple sailing with small kids

Most of these "failings" are more a reflection of our circumstances rather than the condition of the boat. First one of these I'd ever seen & it certainly looked like it should sail nicely...

I would suggest that £5000 for the interior is way below reality. Of course I dont know what needs to be done, but if you are starting from scratch, you are looking at a lot more than that (probably at least double) e.g. headlinings (even if you do it yourself) £1500, ?instruments, ? wiring, ? gas , ? cushions, if the boat has had major damage, how good was the repair, what condition is the engine, does it need new rigging (best to replace if she has fallen over and possibly leant on the mast) is the mast OK.

If it was me I would not touch this boat even if the price was only £5k. there are plenty more out there

I have a 9m Catalac catamaran - old design so windward performance leaves something to be desired, but lots of room, and comfortable.

I have absolutely no idea how that boat will sail as I have not seen her hull.
