Haslar must have changed siince we last visited, we rolled horribly every time a ferry went in or out - which is why we usually go to Campers (Gosport) these days. Even in the bar on teh lightship, we bobbed up and down regularly. Only had trouble with ferry wash at Campers when we were right out on the "breakwater".

The main problem for wash seem to be the pilot boats which moor on the wall just opposite in Haslar Creek. Depending on the tide times there can be none in and out or a lot of movement.

Usual marina rants.

Isn't it amazing the speed with which any post asking about a marina immediately develops into a list of rants about expensive, awful facilities in UK marinas.

Having been in France, Spain and Ireland recently the average UK marina is fine. There are a few disasters, eg both Cowes marinas but overall things are not that bad. In France just because the berth is cheaper, by the time you pay 2 euros per shower, with a crew of 6 what's the price then, often for rubbish. eg St Vaast, Treguiere etc ? Liked the comment about mops being in place for peeps to tidy up behind themselves but as a society maybe we just get a reflection of what we, collectively, are.

The Baltic may be marvellous but look at their taxes. I have not experienced their facilities, I look forward to that.

Re: Usual marina rants.

The biggest problem with Haslar is that neither of the resutrants have any food at all available between 3pm and 7pm. This is the main issue I have, we often seem to arrive at 2.30 and bythe time we are all tied up, it is too late to eat.

I sugges twe all write to the office asking if they can make it a term of the lease that they provide good food all day.

We stayed in Island Harbour for a couple of days last month & the facilities are noticeably better- still a lot of dredging & building work going on, which detracts a bit at present, but I think they are putting in a real effort to improve things. Very friendly & helpful staff & reasonable fees.

The one that struck me and my crew as having very bad showers when we arrived the other week - not because its bad compared to its UK competitors, but just because it was the first UK marina we arrived in after coming over from Netherlands - was Wolverstone on the East Coast.

[/ QUOTE ]should have gone to Shotley!

Not only decent showers, with lovely underfloor heating, but baths too!

There's always Port Solent if you're desperate to avoid any wash.

There is also the Royal Clarence Marina and they don't seem to get much in the way of wash problems.

Nonsense!
I was there last week to see the Clipper RTW flotilla before they left for Liverpool and the scend there could roll you out of your bunk. As for the building work being finished, it looked as if they've only just started!

Re: Which other Gosport Marina?

Ooops, sorry, I guess that the berths on the outer ends of the pontoons can be susceptible to wash from vessels passing outside, same as eg the Premier marina further south.
When I was there recently, we were tucked up inside, and no worries.
I will endorse the recommendation above for the Pump House - a most excellent eating establishment!
Re the building works - they seemed to have archeologists in (in June) excavating an old Brewery from the 17th century - I guess once they have done all that they have to do the site will be 'built over'.

We spent two nights at Halsar two weeks ago, and while I agree with some of the the posters regarding the quality of the facilities (good/clean/plentiful) we were moored on I44, next to the visitor pontoons - never again. The wash started at 05:45 and carried on right through until 23:00.

We put out extra warps (for our comfort) and extra fenders (for our protection) as people were pushed onto other boats due to wash when mooring. We also had to put up with the noise of some very Pi**ed people leaving the lightship both nights and making their way around the pontoons trying to find their vessels, but the highlight was when at 00:00 some fool started shouting at the top of his voice for 20 minutes enquiring as to who had stolen his washboards".

Whilst I am not a particular fan of Portsmouth (only because I like a good night sleep and hate the ferry wash!), I would got to Gosport everytime for one reason..

I have to say that Gosport Marina have got by far the best showers anywhere in the Solent - so a visit just to take a shower is well worthwhile!
