Hardships

Last evening, on my way home from my place of employ, I called in to see Claymore. I crouched down to see if there were any barnacles right under the keel and on discovering it to be a barnacle-free zone I stood up delighted by my discovery. I hit the back of my head on the hull, which gave me a headache which still faintly lingers - is this what is meant by hardship?
