Hi,

Would be interested if anyone can comment on or recommend a handheld GPS. I was looking at the Garmin GPS72 as a possible basic model.

Thanks

I've got the GPS 76 which is basically the same one. Absolutely first rate reception. Even works inside our house - well up[against a window - and also works inside the boat. Battery life is also way better than it was with the GPS45 I had before.

I dont bother with a fixed GPS. Instead I use the protable, in its holster and with a data cable / 12v supply situated just by the wheel.

Bought one earlier this year & very pleased with it.

Get the marine package if you need a 12V lead & bracket.

The navaids in the basemap seem a bit out, at least the ones I've checked.

Yes fully recommend the garmin gps72, excellent for all my journeys along the south coast and crossing the channel, using routes and goto waypoints, have not put new batteries in yet, after one year, probably because I connect up to the boats batteries when on longer journeys, also I have bought and fixed a bracket for it which we use, it gives you all you really need for navigating,of course we still plot the course every hour on charts to be safe.

Went for the Garmin 76 'cause it had a MOB feature and a couple of other things that the 72 didn't have. Took a lot of time looking at prices and got it from [www.sportextreme.com] very quick and cheap and they do a few other bits as well. My 76 was cheaper than most 72s in the uk.
