Hand held VHF DSC or not

I should also have added it is extremely useful to have a second battery tray that takes AA batteries, so if the main one does die, you can use the backup.

My (non waterproof) ICOM M10 which has this feature is getting time expired and I've been having a look around for a new handheld.

Anyone know of a non DSC waterproof handheld which can take AA cells as backup? These details aren't listed on most adverts.

All of the SH ones have trays available but don't necessarily come with them.

If that is the case then Standard Horizon have changed the specification of the HX-851E in recent months. What I stated in my previous quote was correct some months ago, but the situation may have changed. I wrote to Standard Horizon and their reply was the reason for my quote.

It doesn't happen on mine purchased at the 2010 boat show - mine will last a week if I turn it off every day after use and needs to find its position again when switched on in the morning.

I'm not sure that they all do, but yes, a lot do. That is more to the point that I was getting at when I previously said "handhelds with DSC are probably better spec'd".
Sorry if others just looked at that comment at a superficial level.
ie STANDARD HORIZON HX851E
internal GPS
Navigate to waypoints
compass display

Of course it has GPS, how do you think the DSC functions can operate without it ?

Not putting the MMSI in makes absolutely no sense at all. What do you think you gain by not putting it in ? If you put the MMSI in and don't use any DSC functions in normal use, it works the same as any other VHF set. If you ever need to send a mayday, it'll send you coords and some details about you and your vessel via DSC. If you're not putting the MMSI in, you might as well not have DSC.
