The same principles in this thread apply to everything in everyday life. nothing is really black or white. People try to short cut anything to increase profits once they can see the money. Oh of course you say not everyone does so, well perhaps not but the reality is a lot do. In any service.

The suggestions that boat owners should write repair specifications and oversee repairs at yards is not practical for many folks. I have had many repairs performed at yards and always have had satisfactory service. Of course, there has to be a discussion and eventually a request put in writing for the work that the boat owner requires but I would expect electricians, gas fitters, cabinet makers, riggers and GRP specialists to follow recognised standards.

The problem with detailing your own specifications for works to be performed is that you immediately transfer responsibility to yourself, to a degree. If the work results in a complaint and they have followed your specifications, then you would only have yourself to blame. Regarding being present, I certainly don't have the time to be at a yard and oversea work, I have my own business needs to manage on a daily basis. Certain repairs, such as structural work, I would engage a surveyor to oversee the repair work.

There is no doubt that due diligence is required, and a bit of self education, word of mouth, asking on forums, querying who will perform the work is just good practise that everyone should follow. I have noticed though, that certain yards in my area are struggling to supply time served trades persons, also as their trade employees get older, they are becoming reluctant to perform certain difficult jobs.

Thank you Paul for these updates and following through. I too am in the process of dispute resolution with HYS/AYS following works undertaken at around the same time as yourself. Your encouragement is welcomed. I am currently experiencing all of the same issues that you did, refusal to accept any responsibility for the poor work and increasing evidence of having cut corners and not done the job correctly. Your warnings about the company are correct.
