If he passed on all the advice he got here to the crane driver, not surprised the latter chickened out! Lifting 10-12 tons of 40' boat is not a trivial matter if things go wrong.
Remember a boat we built for a Gulf State harbour where they lifted it with spreaders, but got the strops in the wrong place. It was a 42' launch with almost parallel sides and little flare so the strops just sat on the chines. Slid gracefully stern first into the harbour. Fortunately the insurance company paid us to build a new boat.
