Impeller on the starboard side destroyed itself and I replaced it recently. Check today shows more fragments in the strainer which is intriguing. I am going to check the new one for damage now.

One possible point of significance is that the pot drains down as fast as it can be filled, leaving about an inch in the bottom. The port side remains full. As the two sides are identical, that bothers me. I am assuming that the lack of water may have contributed to the destruction.

Any advice would be appreciated please.

Sorry i missed that question.

The strainer shoukdnt be empty. I had that from an air leak through the screw on top. Engine overheated. A bit of vaseline on the rubber seal got me home.

The rubber had perished. It relies on a completely airtight seal to suck the water up through the strainer.

The other thing that can caise it is if you do not have spiral reinforced non collapsible hose. Normal hose can by sucked closed by the suction and you onky see it when engine is running.

The OPs engine has the trainer, shown in his picture, after the pump so there is no suction. If the strainer has a poor fitting lid water will leak ot when the engine is running. He may, of course have a suction leak between the seacock and pump.
