I guess I might be blackballed from the forum if I were to mention Jean d'Arc and William the Conqueror?... So I won't.

one or two chaps who were a dab hand with the antifoul brush come to mind: Monet, Manet, Pissaro, Renoir, Matisse, Cezanne, Gauguin, Degas....

Not intended to be directed at you, just a few names. But to throw a different name into the melting pot, how about Jean Moulin?

Re: After a great deal of thought

Alain Prost

Charlotte Rampling

And my mate Chico.

Ap is just great where ever he comes from. Charlotte is french by choice rather than birth which shows devotion and what a great word Rampling is. I'd like to be Rampled. My mate Chico is a motor racing tech from Le Mans. He drinks so much that even the others have noticed. When he drinks he misbehaves in a spectacular fashion. Two of the finest examples of his special mischief go as follows.

A gaggle of us left a bar in a french town square. It's late and we've supped well. On the way back to the minibus we spot a police car, parked at the roadside. Inside are two burley gendames. Chico, who is more than a little unsteady, pee's on the cars bonnet. Goes to the car directly in front of the police car. Gets in and drives away. He didn't get far.

On another evening out, having practiced Creme Caramel racing until we felt sick, Chico decides he can whip the table cloth out from under a table setting. Two went wrong but he still thought he could make it work. Security differed. That was in the George V Hotel in Paris. I think he's banned. Nothing ever seems to happen to this guy. No great sanction anyway. I suspect that the french are much more laid back than we could ever be.

embodiment of the resistance as opposed to John Stuart Mill who (a) was not French at all and (b) according to Monty Python, "of his own free will, on half a pint of shandy was particularly ill"

Emmanuelle

I can't think of a single good-looking frenchman apart from Prost or Platini who were both losers when it xcame to the crunch, and let's face it, old Beakynose was only dragged out of retirement cos they were in deep [censored] with their Algies.

So, on the world stage, Emannuelle capture the essence of frenchness far better than GdeG and of course, without their kit on, Emmanuelle would be in the top 3 no question.

All the "inventing things" business is irreleant - we'd have found that out in the first bar/restaurant no bother.

Second is Brigitte, but the donkey-fancying tendencies aren't very attractive to the voters, i bet. Plus, Emanuelle actually LIKED getting her kit off as well.
