Good quality parafin lantern (wick type)

I have a cheapo one on the boat and every now and then I light it for a bit of ‘ambience enhancement’. I am suspect of it’s quality though, costing as it did less than a tenner new.

Is there a good make to look for on ebay? Just for clarity, I refer to the lanterns with a wind up wick, not the pressurised Tilley type. Also, I am aware that these lanterns should not be used with some ventilation present. My boat is festooned with CO and smoke alarms.

Do you mean the bulkhead type mounted on gimbals?
 
I bought two Feuer hand 'Baby special' lanterns, model 276 many years ago to use as anchor lights. Made in Germany as you might guess. I painted them to stop them resting too badly and I still have them. They are of the plated steel hurricane lamp type and work very well and are still available. Shocked to see them on e-bay at £32!
 
We’ve just got a tin plated steel number I picked up in a random hardware store in Portree / Kyle of Lochalsh 3 or 4 seasons ago. It’s lovely this time of year!

Same as mine Minerva. Mine says ‘Deitz’ on it I think but I assume all the cheap ones are much of a muchness. My dream is a stainless version, with a filler cap that doesn’t instantly leak fuel if tilted over at all. Not confidence inspiring that.

Laika, they look well made but I’m not crazy about the look of them. Also I’m after a free standing lantern, not the gimballed type. Cheers though - food for thought.
 
Minerva, I have one similar if not quite the same.
It blows out at the minimum breeze, despite the several different wind screens I tried and added. Did you test yours in a decent wind?

These work as free standing or hanging (there’s no gimbal unless for some odd reason that link is opening on one of their other products for you). I love the styling but appreciate that it’s not going to be for everyone (and then there’s the price…)
 
Go to car boot. And get a old huricane lamp, the old German ones are far superior , get a new wick, take out the glass wire brush it and spray paint any colour. Lovely

Perhaps my desktop computer cant time travel?

I have one of those cheapo lanterns that hangs perfectly above my table and gives a gentle evening light.
However I would never use paraffin, I buy clear indoor lamp oil. Last bottle was from Amazon, certainly last me a season.
Years ago I used to hang one of these lamps, for fun, in social anchorages. Certainly last a long time on a tank fill.

Try secondhand shops and some antique places,I bought one worked a treat
