Very nice! I'd be tempted if I fancied a paraffin lamp. But I have a more utilitarian view - if it's not bright enough to read by, it's not bright enough. And I'm afraid wick type lamps don't provide anything like enough light for me.

I agree but, other than a Tilley, I have yet to find a paraffin or lamp oil light that is good enough to read by. But in a very common situation in the Eastern Med, a group of friends in a cockpit enjoying drinks and snacks, it is a wonderful light source

Each to their own! But doesn't a lamp in the cockpit attract bugs? In the UK, drinks in an open cockpit are not usually favoured by the weather!

Thanks Plum, I picked a Feuerhand Baby Special from that huge selection. It looks very much like the lamp my cheapo is a copy of. Cheers for everyones comments including Neil S who also recommended the Baby Special. I’ll report back when it arrives.

An Aladdin lamp uses a mantle which greatly (300%)? increases the brightness. The mantle is supposed to be a weak link but if you dont play football with it then it lasts and the brightness from lamp oil instead of electricity is very good (and warm).

Pity these aren.t made in a smaller size. Been my emergency back up for many years and the mantle makes the difference.

We bought one in France many years ago which has a circular wick with a sort of inverted top hat over it which spreads the flame and gives very bright light for reading.
