Can some one fill me in about the pros and cons about Glaston Dock or Fleetwood. I love being in Plymouth apart from Bobby making life as difficult as possible and Tutts suddenly getting a calling for teaching, which buggers up most of the week, making the 4-5 hour trip to Plymouth rarely atemptable. Now I'm quite aware that Fleetwood is a terible grotty place and only accesable, what is it? About 1hour either side HW. And glaston only 3/4 of an hour before HW. But its only less than an hour from home. Whats the method for hanging about till the tide comes in. Is there some handy buoys in the river. Well I know there is some, but is it ok to borrow one? The plan would be to keep boat in Glaston but then spend time in Ireland or Scotland but all the charts are on the boat so cant remember how far IOM, Portpatric, Dunleary, Bangor is.
Another reason is. It's only just over a grand a year at Glaston and there I could do some of my own mending and find parts at industrial prices. Instead of being ripped off on V*lv* prices.
Now the important bit. Theres a couple of pubs in Glaston so thats OK. (Are they any good). Bit doubtfull about getting to the sailing club pontoon at Knot End though it looks all mud most of the time. Tell me about Barrow? Theres an Island or summat there. Maybe good place to hang around till tide comes in.
Most important thing is. I dont believe in spending half the night waiting for tides so need good parking place and an easily reached pub or two for the night. Or is all this just a pipe dream and am I still better with plan A. Which was being in Plymouth in the first place after five years of experiencing the Irish sea from Pwhelli. Where the problem was. Go out but nowhere to go except Ireland, which was a bit of a bugger just for the weekend. Do I have to think it out again!!

Re: Glasson Dock.

The island is Piel Island, the pub is OK.watch the tide going round the end of walney Island.South of Fleetwood is the Ribble .St Annes and the marina in Preston or Hesketh Bank on the Douglas.Access is interesting ,Any where in that Area you must consider the tide.very large rise and fall at Springs.
Glasson and Preston, both locked basins are the safest.North is Maryport and South ,Liverpool.

Re: Glasson Dock.

Yep. I know about that. Never been by boat. Allways avoided the place like the plague and used Ireland or IOM as stageing posts. More interested in the leasure side. If there is one???
Getting sick of the traveling and cost of keeping the boat so far from home. But on the other hand round Devon and Cornwall. Just drop hook or moor. Most any place. With pub round the corner or short dingky ride. Even water taxi! Dont expect theres a water taxi in Fleetwood??
How far is Maryport etc. And Portpatrick. Then only a quick wizz up to Scotland. Thats a nice place. Have not got the charts at home. I know Fleetwood is horibly grotty. But how long a 20knot wizz is it to some where nice and I dont mean bloody Preston or Liverpool. How far IOM? Cant be far. Although thats nearly horrible. Might put up with Glasson or fleetwood. If can zoom up to Scotland or Ireland smartish, although the Mull of whats it's name past IOM can be interesting. Remember from my chart, it says dangerous to distroyers or mine sweepers!!

Look, wouldn't it be cheaper, better and more convenient just to move to Plymouth? Its a beautiful place, still cheap, relatively, some great new harbour-side developments, good place for boating ('cept I can't get a berth!). Grat cruising ground, especially around Dartmouth, South Hams, and ideal for North France if you can handle the 6 hour trip.

Forget the alternatives, its a place of the future!

Re: Moving to Plymouth...........

I happen to know (since SWHMO is also a sometimes teacher) there's a number of supply jobs at grossly inflated rates of pay in Devon...

Re: Moving to Plymouth...........

My wifes a teacher as well, and she is always lecturing me and the girls, I tried to get her to move to Lymington, not a chance no matter how much I like it so here we are in Nottinghamshire, I wont say where exactly but last weekend there was 2 murders in our town, a taxi driver nearly beaten to death, and then the report by the government which says we have the worst police force in the country, with 12% OF 999 calls never answered, and no separate traffic wing in the county, that is why Max power magazine calls all the countrys boy racers to our town for " the circuit" racing through our town, and no police to stop it, great eh, theres no wonder I want to live by the sea, so go on haydn get sold up and buy a tea shop by the sea.

Re: Moving to Plymouth...........

My daughter was at Uni in Nottingham and I have never been so concerned in all my life - murders, rapes, weirdos, - so so glad when she finally finished with no harm except Break-in and robbery...

Anyway, you teachers, in todays local sunday paper HSE group teachers wanted in the Southwest contact 01823 413388 e-mail:kerry.evans@hunterstuart.co.uk....

More boaters wanted, especially motorboating enthusiasts.....

Pipe dreams

You know, I'd like to live by the sea as well. Somewhere like Hythe or Lymington or Poole or Puerto Pollensa or Port Grimaud would be ideal. Then I could have a mooring at the end of the back garden and a little Cranchi Turchese 24 or a Windy Mirage 25 sitting in it. Sadly the reality is 'WE ARE NOT MOVING TO BE BY THE SEA'!

Well, the first thing is; you can't come back to Pwllheli, 'cause there aint no room. But, there might be in the future 'cause the council have given planning permission to put hundreds more berths in. Only problem is there is no dosh to finance the dredging and construction of new berths. I heard a rumour that they have bought a dredger but it broke down in Norway or somewhere and is now stuck there. I have suggested that to keep costs down they only shallow dredge the bit to be developed and then they can put all the stinkies there together because you lot don't need alot of water. (very generous gesture I thought)

Galstone Dock; I remember this place very well from my days at boarding school in Lancaster. One of my pals got left a load of dosh by one of his dead grannies and we used to go to the pubs there to piss it all away. Now we were only 14 at the time but being a strapping sort of lad I could get served at the bar and used to buy all the bacardi and cokes.

Now the school did not permit this behaviour, they didn't even know it was going on. Reason being that every Sunday we had to submit a plan for our activity. We used to put in this huge plan for cycling half way round the lake district and back, which always got accepted, "Good idea, off you go!" but then we used to cycle the back route to Glastron dock and sit in the smokey old pub getting pissed.

So I reckon the pubs must be OK.

Avoid Fleetwood.

Re: Pipe dreams

Do not move to the coast, I sit here typing this and looking at the Penryn River with the boats bobbing at there moorings. Problem is that our boat is still in the boatyard, never made the water. If you retire your ok, most people I know that work are trying to make the water, from launch to lay-up.
So this winters pipe dream is, get the new house finished, get the boat ready for last week of March, and get ahead on work. If I make one, well ??????

PYH needs you!

You can't move Muckyfarter, I'm certainly not going to travel all the way up to Glasson, wherever that may be. Sounds like lots of mud as opposed to chrystal clear water and sand in Salcombe, cream teas in Polperro, lunches in Falmouth.

Oh, and how else am I going to get a trip on a P35? <G>
And I bet you won't get scallops and crab for supper up there!!
