I strongly suggest those speculating about what the skipper was / wasn't doing, stop it immediately.

There is a police investigation in progress and many of the comments on here are bordering on the prejudicial.

Admins - probably best to lock the thread.

Hope the coding gets changed!
That’s fookin mental! Accident waiting to happen!!! 45kn RIB.
Skipper on his phone :-(
That sounds like bollocks / conjecture to me.
Also the coding has no bearing on using a mobile phone at sea. That would come under the colregs failure to maintain proper lookout. As I’m sure you’d know if you were such an expert.

I can only say what I have heard from the horse’s mouth/ RIB builder is MOBILE phone.
Not really the horses mouth then is it? Sounds more like bollocks to me. Leave it to be investigated properly.

WTF so using your PHONE in a car at 50mph is OK !!! Or a RIB at 45+kn ???
You are perfectly at liberty to use your phone in your car at 50 mph. In fact, I was using mine at 110mph on Sunday. However, you cannot hold the phone in your hand. However, in a car, instant reactions are required and excellent alternatives to h/h are available.

I can't see anything dangerous about using a hand-held phone on a boat. I use my phone and h/h VHF at the helm on many occasions. Admittedly not at 45 kn as my boat won't do that, but if I had a boat which did and conditions were good and there were no obstacles to avoid, I'd be happy to use a h/h if the boat was within its safe operating envelope.

Having descended into hearsay and unsubstantiated speculation, now might be a good time to close this thread until such time due process has run its course.

Yes a troll that has been round the UK & Ireland in a RIB & now have a 7.5 cabin cruiser C/W 300hp OB that will do 42kn
Clearly an expert. Thanks for the credentials. I await further words of wisdom.

“cabin cruiser” ?
I think Sid James had one of those in a carry on film?

Err certainly NOT whilst driving, eh ?

To contact others reduce speed to well inside a safety region / heave to, and concentrate upon driving the Rib /boat
So a troll/idiot/expert has seen the use of a vhf/phone in a staged marketing picture and it is being discussed as if it is relevant/causal in this tragic case.

This thread is a disgrace.
