Gib\'Sea 28 Keel

I am trying to buy a Gib'Sea 28. The survey has produced a series of problems most of which I identified and had accounted for when making my offer. The surveyor, however, found when she was hauled out of the ogin, that there was a crack running all the way around the cast keel box where it joins the belly of the hull. He also pointed out that the lifting plate was very sloppy indicating that the bearing and or pin needed replacing urgently and these may have been responsible for the damage to the keel box joint.
I like the boat a lot and would like to buy her but it is make my mind up time. Is this a very expensive job to sort out? Has anyone else had any experience of this job. Is it a common problem or might it indicate some bad treatment? I gather from a previous post that there appears not to be a Gib'Sea association.
I would appreciate any help that can be offered as I am to remortgage my home to buy this vessel so don't want to make a mistake! Many thanks

Re: Gib\'Sea 28 Keel

I had a related problem on my Gibsea77 - the keel slapped in the housing and eventually the pin to the lifting strop pin pulled through the plate. Didn't have any cracking around the keel box though (the age of the boat was 14 yrs at the time).

Anyway - I had the job done when lifted out at the end of season. Charged about half a day's labour to drop the plate out, re-grind the top and refit a new set of pins (lifting + pivot). Note - the boat needs to be lifted/chocked high to get this done. They slapped a bit of paint on at the same time to stop rusting. Had only the slightest amount of cracking which showed no sign of serious 'working' in the 4 yrs I had the boat so didn't have anything done on that. Glad I got them to do it - the plate was about 200kg and didn't fancy catching it myself.

BTW - I found that leaving the plate up when not sailing tended to reduce the wear and tear on the pins.

Mail me direct if you want more detail on this problem or Gibseas.

Tony
