Further to the Bav/Jen/Ben thread below, how do Gib-Sea compare? In particular any comments on a mid 90s Gib-Sea 302 that a colleague is proposing for a yacht share?
Before buying the current Bav, I used to have a Gib'sea 77 (26'). It was a 1985 boat which I sold in 1999 after 4 yrs of ownership. I found them to be solidly constructed and easy to sail; I was very fond of mine which gave no trouble beyond typical maintenance for a boat of its age. Like all boats of the era you'd have to look at things like standing rigging, engine etc and make a call - but otherwise there are no problems because of age.
I chartered some gibseas in the Channel islands, the 7, 10 and 12m can t remember the exact model numbers.
They were owners boat and I rather liked them, simple to handle, forgiving/tender in stronger winds, spartan interiors which personally I liked a lot, feeling of being rather solidly built. Not racing machines, at all.
Just impressions from a few weeks sailing, nothing more though.
Mine like being freed off the wind and didn't point exceptionally well - possibly because if the lifting-fin-in-stub keel and thin blade rudder. But reef early and it was fine.
Hi I have a gibsea 126 ketch 1982 I find her to be very strong and stable ..i sail her single handed(+autopilot) and have to do things a bit early some times..i replaced the skin fittings and some of them i had a problem fitting the seacocks as the hull is so thick very little thread left...I have been caught out in some very strong winds and nasty seas she looked after me..I cant speak for the newer models tho dont know by xperiance ..if its an early one its worth a second look.(imho)
