Windy doesn't do 'wind and swell over tide in shallowish water'.

I was trying to figure out why his kit was reporting 0.7kts earlier, when at the entrance to the gulf SE of Isla Guapo.


Edit: At 1900UTC he was close S of that island. Hadn't made much progress.....
And at 2000UTC.....

Problems?

True nuff re wind over tide, I'm surprised he didn't get a bit further off the land as soon as he exited Low Bay. Nothing too remarkable about the tide in the middle of Boca de Guafo.
Tacked to the south now and making good speed.

It looks like Abhilash has about 125 miles to run, almost due east, to bring Cape Horn abeam.

He should have both wind and tide-stream in his favour, but it looks like there's thickening cloud approaching from the west, with more breeze. Let's hope he can get a LOP for latitude before long, so he can 'sharpen' his DR and turn east sharpish.

Simon doesn't seem to have much other than headwinds coming his way.

Edit: He tacked west about midnight, clearly needing to get some searoom. I think the GGR watch-crew are 'polling' his locator beacon hourly....

Around 1800UTC23Feb, Simon and Michael are about in VHF range of each other..... and inside 55nm from Cape Horn Island.

Leaving aside the rules of the race I reckon Simon is the pick of the bunch.
Backtracks about 1000 miles to Montt ( 500 each way?) and out of the race for about 2 weeks ( Montt and Pto Low) and he is level 3rd and only 1300 miles behind the leader. Bit of a bugger that linkage breaking.

Very interesting duel between Abhliash and Kirsten right now.

If you click on the Overlay Map Flag (Wind) icon and choose WINDY, you ill see the weather that they are up against.
Abhliash is turning NNE and so has Kirsten.
Check out there relative positions to the prevailing winds.
Like slow motion chess.

Looking at Simon's positioning near the SW corner of Staten Island, he'll have the strong tide through the strait against him for the next 3-4 hours.

Simon has opted to go around the bottom of Estados. Hope he keeps clear of the overfalls off the eastern end.

Everything is now up to tactics and luck for all four. Getting across the South Atlantic High is going to be 'interesting'

Apologies for the thread drift, but some of the readers on here might be interested in the sailing exploits of Berrimilla, an Aussie Brolga 33 who while she did not compete in any Golden Globe races as such, had a very good bash at them on her own terms.

In a nutshell, for their first time around they did the Sydney - Hobart race in Berrimilla, then soon after set sail for England via the Horn to take part in the Fastnet, did quite well in the 2 handed division, then sailed back home afterwards via the Cape of Good Hope, arriving in time for the next S2H.

It appears Jeremy Bagshaw has, this morning, less than 80nm to go to Cape Horn.
He has easterly headwinds ATM, which are forecast to veer progressively around to the west and 'free' him to push past that crucial waypoint later today.

I hope there's enough light and 'distance off' for him to get some good photos.

Went last night to listen to Barry Pickthall talk about the GGR at Emsworth Sailing Club.

Barry reckons Simon is quite likely to catch up with Abhilash and Kirsten. Mainly because Clara is so much lighter and faster, and he's good at pointing the boat in the right direction.

The highlight of the evening was a call from Simon himself! Allowed under the rules as a "media interview" to journalist Barry.

Simon was in good form. Claiming that he was no longer racing, but cruising. "Yeah, right" was the general reaction! Also gave a bit more info on steering failure. His and Hydrovane's expectation was that the vane would/should have failed sacrificially, rather than the casting.

The most important question, from a friend of ours, was whether Simon had managed to fix his broken "Hitchkers Guide To The Galaxy" cassette tape! This perplexed Barry, but we insisted it was important . The answer was "No".
