Getting at the engine

Looking at the vids on refit and sail he had an engine in his workshop to do a oil change,then he came to the engine anodes which would have presented quite an effort to get at them. If the engine had been installed in the boat,how many of you change your engine anodes As per the engine handbook?

I replace the pencil anode each year and check halfway through th season to see if it needs changing or will survive the rest of the season, , fortunately not too difficult to access although the occasional scraped knuckle has to be endured.

I changed the pencil anode this year, the boat has been in my ownership for four years and I have no idea when it was last changed! When removed it like a blob of wet putty.

First engine Ihad that I read the handbook and discovered engine anodes,luckily on the Italian engine(the name escapes me) I religiously changed the anode as it was easy but other parts like the water pump was almost impossible to reach.

When replacing my engine in 2017 I found that, in all options, the alternator, oil, filter, exhaust outlet etc were on opposite sited to the older models.................Is there a reason for this change?

Is that a 3 pot Yanmar ? Same mountings and drive outlet but …. ? Tiresome

Could it be that they turned the base engine round? When I was replacing a VP2003 I considered a VPD1-30 but found that some things needed access from the opposite side, which was very hard. The rotation direction was also reversed.

No itwas a Lombardine,just looked it up
Ruggerini Motori S.p.a. was an engine manufacturer founded in 1919 in Reggio Emilia, Italy, (which is also where a competitor, and later parent company Lombardini was based). Ruggerini built air cooled diesel engines that were available in 1 to 3 cylinders and ranged from 4.5 to 38 horsepower. In 1999, Lombardini Fabbrica Italiana Motori S.p.A. purchased Ruggerini and the brand was eventually discontinued.
I copied that of course, as I 'recognize' the issue with the water pump!

Largely determined by the base engine used as these things are fixed - and yes the switch from the Volvo purpose designed engines of the 200X series to the Perkins base units meant everything is on the opposite side. The main use of the base engine is in small tractors where access is from both sides rather than the front so access no problem. They did however manage to put the raw water pump om the front, although not perfect as access to the bolts thst hold it on is a nightmare! These things are not a big issue for new installations as good builders take access into account when designing the installation. Problem for replacement of earlier models though.

That is one of the main attractions of the Kubota base engines as used by Beta and Nanni. They have the main service points on the front of the engine, although the exhaust is on the port side, opposite to earlier Volvos and Yanmars. Beta have a kit to convert exhausts for Yanmars to use existing systems. My GH had a Perkins/Volvo 2040 and my first preference for a replacement was a D1 30 as I could live with the poor position of the filters on the starboard side, but I could not get a Volvo dealer to take a serious interest in doing the installation which was more than just dropping in an engine. So I went for a Beta 30. Photos show original 2040 then jig to determine location for building new engine beds, just after bolting down and final installation (still some work on wiring and new engine box at this stage).

I changed from a VP2003 to a D1. 30.
I installed a Beta in my previous boat.
While the VP D series had its faults... Mainly electronic.... The Beta also had some issues... Mainly with the marinising kit and belt wear.

Indeed. Nothing is perfect. Add exhaust elbow to the weaknesses on Volvos, particulalry for low annual usage engines. Belt wear no longer an issue with Beta as they no longer use V belts as you can see from the photo. anode in the heat exchanger and welded up exhaust may also be a long term issue.

I had a Beta 20 hp installed 2007. The anode in the heat exchanger was perhaps the easiest service item. I retrofitted the improved belt system as the v belts were just a frenzy of black dust. That was a big improvement.
Access is so important. I can still feel the top of the engine digging in to my ribs as I slithered across to reach the gearbox dipstick….and the thought of a problem with the starter motor used to freak me out.
If and when I get another boat access to all parts of the engine will be a major criterion.

I don’t think designers give enough attention to engines and access even after all theses years
