I am in the process of fitting out ready for a trip south in June.
I am trying to work out what size gas locker I need. I have found the sizes of Calor bottles but I understand that I will need Camping Gaz bottles abroad, but I cannot find the sizes of them. Can anyone help?

Haven't got any camping gaz bottles now, but used them before, next to Calor.
They are a bit smaller than Calor bottles. If you make a gas locker for Calor, you can use calor in the UK and Camping gaz when abroad. More expensive, not very convenient as the bottles have about half the quantity of gaz, they are awkward to carry unless you have a dedicated plastic handle, but yes, they are generally available in many countries.

There is a Dutch company that offers ready made gas lockers in different sizes.
look here for information. It will also give you a clue about sizes. English version available.

happy sailing,

Go to your nearest caravan shop, as they will have both. The standard 4.5kg calor bottle and the camping gas equivalent are very nearly the same size (with the camping gas slightly smaller and containing less gas). The camping gas bottle of that size has a screw in connector of a different size to the calor, but most caravan shops have an adapter to allow the calor regulator to be used for both.

The largest size Camping Gas bottles are, as several posters have said, slightly (not a lot) smaller than the smallest Calor bottle. However, the base ring of a Camping Gas bottle is larger than the base ring on a Calor Bottle. My boat was originally fitted with a wooden base to the gas locker with two circles cut out for Calor bottles. When I switched to Camping Gas I had to enlarge the holes by about 10mm so they would sit in.

The stories about Camping Gas being very expensive are only half true. It is very expensive in the UK and very very expensive in France. However, in Spain, Italy and Greece it is so cheap it is not worth thinking about. In Croatia you have to have your bottles re-filled anyway and the gas is very cheap. In Turkey, buy Turkish bottles - it costs less for gas and a bottle than most countries charge for the gas alone!

Use the opposition to Calor and get the 8kg look alike bottles free, then buy a straight thro' connector (Calor) and some H.P hose. When abroad you can borrow a local bottle, buy a local straight through connector and H.p. hose to suit their bottle. Hey presto fill your own no problem.

In Italy similar local bottles are 3€ so no trouble to buy, In Croatia they are used to filling your bottles (but take the straight through conn. with you).

Portugal and Spain I filled my own including Camping Gaz.

Hope you are non smoking!
Bon Voyage
