Can anyone recommend someone in the Solent area to service our Flavel Vanessa gas cooker? Do you think there will be a problem getting a professional to look at an old cooker that no doubt wasn't designed to meet all the current regulations?

you can get hold of most of the bits for the flavel vanessa from Calor shops (I had one so know the problems) but at the end of it , it still will not meet the latest safety requirements. The addition of cutouts on all the burners is a big advantage. The new ones have much better sealing ovens, and if you pay a bit more can even have a thermostatically controlled oven (SWMBO would be very pleased). The parts to renovate a vanessa will quickly add up to the same price as a new cooker, especially if you have an engineer to do the work.

You can only get some parts - you cannot get the rectangular perforated diffusion grids for the grill burner - which of course burn through...... Most professionals will throw up their hands in horror!

What you are asking for, I imagine, is a Gas Safety Certificate? It's worth having, may be a requirement in the small print of your insurance (or they might give you a discount if you have one) and costs around £60 or so, ISTR, including the odd hose. The firm who did my boat at Chichester a couple of months ago said they'd allow a full hour on site which he gladly used up doing a few jobs on the cooker for me. I was very satisfied.

Sure, I'll post it here because on checking it was a bit more than I said - I presume that they had quoted me ex-VAT. The firm is Caravan & Gas Services Ltd, Bridham, Chichester, 01243 514499

Upgrade gas system and fit regulator, hose, test point and fittings to comply with Gas Installation Safety and Use Regulations. Check cooker. Issue Gas Installation Safety Record No. xxxxxx

Regulator, hose, clips. Bulkhead and straight fittings. Nozzle. Test point. Connector. £24.26

Labour/Certificate £70

Plus VAT £16.53 Total £110.99

But nevertheless, I was very happy with the service. He spent well over an hour with us and did a good job, also dismantled the cooker, cleaned it, etc.

My Corgi Gas Engineer charges £35 to service a gas boiler, test the entire mains gas carcassing and issues a Landlords Safety Certificate for £35 which includes and exhaust emission test and efficiency. How come it costs twice as much for a boat?

Don't know. You'd have to ask them. I suppose that if you can do a bunch of properties in a street you don't have so much travelling compared with going out to a boat on a pontoon? The man was with us for well over an hour and I have just remembered he supplied me with an adaptor for converting Calor to Camping Gaz, which is probably £8 or £10?

Maybe others will tell us how much they have had to pay for similar work and we will see how they compare.
