Garmin Street Pilot III

Does anyone use the Garmin Street Pilot III? If so is it any good?

And does it work as a marine GPS?

I am looking for something that has the 2 uses.

I have had a look at that, but prefer the Garmin 176C that I have. I use the unit on the boat with the Atlantic Blue Chart, and around Europe in the car with the Map source Europe street maps. Brilliant bit of kit, it is like being on a moving A-Z on the roads with loads of other features. It is so simple to unclip, with special vehicle and marine bracket, makes moving it around a breeze, plus Garmin have a great after sales service as most know.

Beware of the small screen on the Street Pilot, perhaps Ok with the voice giving directions, but not a hope really of seeing a chart on there clearly, if it takes them.

My streetpilot III is excellent for the car, though I wish I had a bigger datacard- 32MB is only 1/4 of the UK generally. 128 would be great, and many deals come with this now. I haven't tried it on the boat, and didn't know that it would have data for marine use. Marine applications are probably better suited though as Happy says, and have all of the extra features such as Anchor darg alarms, tide prediction, etc etc.
But for 'between car' portability and value for money, the streetpilot has been great. Turn by turn instructions very good too. Beware of uring it with cars such as Vauxhall vectra, various Renaults etc with that metallic heat reflective windscreen- it blocks the 'view' if satellites, and you would have to get a remote antenna (or hold it out of the window!!)

Nice idea- not sure it can be done.

I have been using the Streepilot for over a year and it is an excellent piece of kit and the small screen is very easy to read. There is a new update for Mapsource (5.5) coming out in Feb which would be worth waiting for as the Maps are getting a bit dated.

I did ask at the Garmin Stand at the Southampton Boat Show and they said no. There is no way of displaying LAT/LONG or putting a waypoint in that is not an address or point of interest.

Apparently I was being rude to you, I was just trying to nudge you along /forums/images/icons/wink.gif Anyway it just said something about the LBS being ideal for you to see all the gear and have a chat with the experts. Still think the Garmin 176 is the one for you, as for other brands I can't comment, Garmin is my only experience.

I did see them. And i did not see anything offensive in either of them. And i didn't think you were being rude.

You asked why i was interested in it, when i have a sat nav in my car?

The reason for looking at it is... I am looking at putting Sat Nav, into 2 of my Vans, and while looking at Garmins Website for a GPS for myself, i noticed the Streetpilot III, and thought it looked quite a good piece of kit. Being a Scotsman, i will try and save a few quid where i can, So i thought if I bought the Streetpilot through the business and it also doubled up as a Gps at weekend, then i wouldn't need to be out of pocket myself. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif/forums/images/icons/wink.gif
I e-mailed Garmin direct to ask them the question, they said no, but recommended the GPSMAP 196, but it doesn't have voice commands, If boys are using it in the van, then i need to keep it simple for them.

So basically i need to think again.
