I need to take the centre plate out of my Oakleaf (27.5FT X 8.25FT) to get rid of loads of rust. The taking out and refitting should only be hard work (with luck!) and cleaning down to bare metal should not be too much of a problem. When the plate is down to bare metal should I have it galvanised or go very modern and have it powder coated?

I only want to take the plate out every five years or so and want a coating which will last at least that long.

Any suggestions (remember it IS the festive season!)?

Read in a book called wooden boat restoration (author has not come to mind but can be checked) that in numerous cases he has coated the the centrboard or rudder in epoxy and it has both adherred and lasted. I had intended doing this - when I free the board) as many hot dip galvanisers have distorted plate I have sent to them up to 6mm when such a large surface area.

The best finish would be to shot blast it clean and then hot dip galvanise it. But as noted, it may well distort. In which case get it shot blasted and hot zinc sprayed. This is nearly as good as galvanising but no distortion. You could then paint it with a two part epoxy primer. Look in yellow pages for steel fabricaters.
Powder coating is often done over a galvanised surface which gives a very good protection with a more decorative finish.
