Frightened of the dark

Do barnacles need light to impose upon & adhere themselves to a surface? If so then would wrapping the outdrive in a bag, if the boat wasn't to be used for a while, prevent such fouling ?

Nope, it's only algae and weed that need light to grow. Barnacles are animals that feed by sifting sea water through little arms with 'feathers' that trap particles

So as long as there's no water flow through the bag, they'll eventually run out of food, no? Seems it should work, even if not 100%.

They would also have the problem of not knowing the combination for getting into the bag in the first place.

There is a couple in our marina that do that on their boat, they swear blind that it makes a huge difference to the legs.

It looks quite fiddly to do, i have seen them poking away with sticks trying to get the bags round the legs.

Also you run the risk of trying to motor off with them on, be it a small risk it is still a risk.

The amount of times I tried to ride my bike out of the garage with its disk lock on!

speaking as a professional barnacle-farmer, which started when i inadvertently bought a boat with appears to have barnacle-attracting antifoul paint, i can concur with brendan. They don't mind the dark and they love boats and boating. The darkness in a bag means that they can't swim up and oho sproink stick to the boat hehe free boating here we go! I think they like it to be where it's lighter rather than darker, though, perhaps because there's a better view whilst going along.

I'm told they'll all be wearing shell suits when they head out to sea this year so it's better in the light when they can show off to their mates.

Having a drying mooring means poking about is not necessary - can get down & dirty with the outdrive. However chest high waders and a lot of washing powder are needed instead. Anybody know where one could get a pair of "mud shoes"?

Mud shoes - like snow shoes? Make em out of of a couple of washing up bowls with straps riveted inside. You'll have to experiment depending on constituency of mud, might need a bigger load bearing area if mud very watery and soft (cut down oil drums)


Of course, you'll look a right plonker walking around on shore with muddy washing up bowls strapped to your feet!

Hi Brendan!
as an ex member of the ZSL and fellow animal freak ( me that is). what do you think about placing the legs in a waterproof bag and adding a non corosive to "legs" (but unsuitable to sustain the life of plankton based creatures) chemical. I did think of raising the salt level to that of the dead sea and beyond but thought that the legs may suffer? is it worth a thought? given environmental issues.
