My new fridge is going to be too big for short weekends, besides filling it with beer, i want to make it more economical to run, can i half fill it with foam blocks???
Yes, foam blocks would certainly help. But depending on the type of fridge and your useage pattern (boat+fridge) the cans of beer (or milk, or even water!) would provide a better thermal store. I usually take frozen UHT milk to the boat to assist the fridge.
What i have done is to use freezer packs in a divided section, they take the unit straight down to the required temprature and when the have defrosed take them home and re-freeze.
When we have been cruising we drop them into a local shop overnight and they freeze them in their big frezers.
makes a big diffrence to the time the fridge runs for.
Won't foam blocks...weighing more than air.....actually use slightly more energy to cool them?.
I can see how the extra insulation of the blocks would help though, but the blocks would have to be around the edges of the internal space & not insulate the cold plate from the essential beer.
The point is to avoid lots of nice cold air that you've 'paid for' spilling out when you open the fridge.......especially if it's front opening. It certainly helps in a sparcely loaded home freezer......though ours is always so full it would survive a very long power-cut.
rich I usually keep plastic bags full of water in any empty spaces. Good for the drinks, is handy for shapes and keeps fridge full. make sure you use the leakproof boil in bag type.
