I have used Bainbridge Marine in the past and they are a fine upstanding outfit !
Slightly unusual in that they don't deal direct, so one just nominates a chandlery which is handy to collect from and they sort it out; at least that was how it was a few years ago, all went quickly and smoothly.

Possibly the biggest importer of marine chain from China. When I tested a dozen or so samples collected from chandleries around North Wales almost half of them were supplied by Bainbridge. And the Chinese stuff was the best on test.

Is it only me then? When ordering anything from building stuff to boat stuff i always give myself a company name to get good discount.

Why not? I ordered a bunch of DIY items from B&Q in February, they're not going to be delivered until 17th April - I still had to pay at the counter for the order....

I'm fairly sure mail-order comes under Distance Selling regulations, which differ from "traditional" retail.

They do, although I don't remember anything about not charging until shipped.
Possibly it's a rule made by the card companies, rather than law?

If you purchase something from an online retailer via Ebay, you still make your paypal payment first before the order goes through....other than the "shell" company providing the interface, that's no different.
On one quick trawl, we find one of the largest Electronics suppliers will take payment upfront before shipping:

Although by Credit/Debit card, they do what most online retailers do:

Essentially "shadowing" the value in your account, so it is pseudo-withdrawn, but not actually taking it until despatched
