For the love of God, can we have a separate ‘Anchors and Anchoring’ forum please?

Most people do. Sadly keyboard warriors and trolls and spammers try to infiltrate and the sponsors of the forum like to keep it on subject and free from abuse.
eg My first task when I checked in a moment ago wax to permanently remove someone trying to advertise second passports for sale.

It’s not just me; there’s a small team and a professional admin who keep an eye on things.
Before too many questions are asked. the rule we are asked to comply with is that moderation policy or decisions aren’t ever discussed in public on the forums.

Thanks for being here to "keep an eye on things" :)

99.9999% of people are very helpful and offer their excellent advice willingly. It is just the remainder who do not respect other's views and make the forum thoroughly unpleasant:cry:

I've had to come to the conclusion that some people must have had really awful experiences with anchors and ended up so worried about the whole business they've taken up superstition to appease the Anchor Spirits and just can't live with heresy. I am sorry for their scars but can't stand the fanaticism; unfortunately there are multiple sects who have very different ideas about what the Anchor Spirits want. This must be awful to have to moderate, my thanks to all who do.

Really, 0.0001% of people on this forum make it "thoroughly unpleasant"? Maybe another way of looking at it is that this place is very pleasant, helpful and excellent. TNLI's posts, that are likely the source of the OPs complaints, doesn't appear to get annoyed by any criticism directed at him. TNLI posts with aplomb. Hence, maybe the issue is really with the reader of a post and not the poster. Cura te ipsum, Luke 4:23

If TNLI is a troll as many suggest he must be laughing his socks off right now. Generating half a dozen locked threads and now a thread pretty much specifically about him must count as a great success.

I don't understand why people become so energised by anchor threads. I reckon to open about 30% of posts on the forum, the others don't interest me. If you don't like anchor threads, don't open them.

Perhaps it's a psychosomatic thing?
As in, anchors are meant to give us a firm grip (on the seabed).
But when people's beliefs (about their favourite anchor) are questioned, they worry they are loosing a firm grip (on what they believe).

Just heard a really interesting comment on a podcast.

’why social media and forums don’t work is we are expected to put complex thoughts into a few sentences with minimal context for our ideas’

As soon as I heard this I thought of an anchor thread 😂

On a positive note, a previous anchor thread on this forum pointed me towards some test results which led me to replace the Delta anchor supplied with my yacht, with a shiny new 22kg Excel. Setting, holding and quality of sleep have all improved considerably

... but not as well as it might have done had you bought a better anchor :D

^^ This.

Threads about a boat specific issue or where to find a part are generally self-limiting. The answers are short.

Other threads require a book to put into context. There are a number of books on anchoring, and none of them cover everything. Panope has revealed only a small part of how deep the testing rabbit hole goes, he's done a lot, and still, could write chapters on the holes in his testing, but I won't because he has done a lot of hard work.

I've seen a lot of long disjointed, and sometimes combative, threads on other forums on wiring, varnish, COLREGS and multihulls.

And then there are the "definitive" answers posted, based on experience with one boat and a limited range of bottoms. Case in point; firm sand in cold areas and firm sand in warm areas are not the same, we believe in part, because of seasonal differences in the biom. I can get 30% different results on the same sand flat in the winter vs. summer. And "bad" bottoms completely defy consistent description.

But that is not to say you can't learn a lot from these threads. You just need to set your filters pretty tight. There are usually a few gems buried in there.

One of my favorites for my F-24, on all bottoms, as a ~ 1950 Northill Utility anchor. Old tech for sure, looking superficially like a fisherman's anchor. But if you check the angles, it is MUCH different and has more in common with a Viking or Rocna. Engineered for WWII US seaplanes (the seaplane design was a little different, with the same angles).

And oh yeah ... they anchored using steel cable. Also dig the clamp and pendant.

A common misconception:

The Constitution protects your right to have and express and opinion, but it does not require people to respect the opinion itself, only your right to express it.

Put another way, you can post what ever you like, and someone else is just as free to civilly disagree. Of course, most of us get prickly, to variable extent, when anyone disagrees, and even more so if they imply we are foolish, which we may be and it's just their opinion, which they are allowed to have.

Put another way, pull up your big boy pants, this is a water cooler conversation, and it won't be controlled.

My solution? I watch for any pearls of wisdom that may be scattered in the melee. There are always a some, and very few posters are all wrong.
