Portuguese go doolally with explosives,usually maroons, around New Year. Try your nearest copshop or army base.

We were berthed stern-to the paseo in Palma Mallorca at New Year a few years ago. The boat we were on had some outdated Spanish flares that the owner said we were welcome to let off at midnight. The first one went about 3 metres into the air, turned a right angle and zoomed to the paseo, where it landed in the middle of the road and burned for the following two or three minutes. The next one burned very fitfully and we dumped it in the sea. After around 30 seconds it went off and flew almost horizontally over the superyachts inside the marina. We gave up then.

Take them to the police station if you have plenty of time.The man on the desk will probably need to consult a superior but they do have an explosives dept.
